Foundation News

Week 3 & 4

The weeks are flying by us as we engage with new learning and consolidate our skills and knowledge.  We finished last week off with our 100th day celebration.  What a terrific day! Thanks families for your wonderful spread of food - we thoroughly enjoyed it.  Students are gaining confidence as they practise numbers to 100 and beyond.   We enjoyed sharing what we've learnt so far in Foundation after 100 days and also what we will be doing when we are 100 years old! Such a fun day!

PARENT HELPERS - thanks to our wonderful parents that have been coming in regularly to read and support our students.  We value your time and appreciate you learning with us.

EXCURSION - our upcoming excursion to Kew Traffic School is fast approaching.  Please jump onto the parent portal to ensure you've paid and given PERMISSION on Sentral as there are still some payments outstanding.

we've been learning to...

VISUALISE - students have developed their understanding of another comprehension skill.  Visualising is thinking about words and phrases in your mind.  Constantly thinking about author's words as you read or are read to.  Students have created some wonderful mental images that are on display in our room.

MAKE GROUPS & SHARE - students have been developing their multiplication and division skills.  We haven't introduced the term 'multiplication' or 'division' but have been using language such as 'making groups' and 'share between'.  It is important for children to develop specific language skills related to maths.  Any chance you have at the dinner table to talk about sharing peas or carrots would be a great support for your child's development.  Students need lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers. You can support your child in many ways. Make connections for your child by explaining how numbers and counting are a part of everyday life.

NARRATIVE WRITING - students have been working hard on their writing.  They have had numerous mini lessons focusing on what a narrative story has.  They have begun writing their own stories and we plan to show you the finished product!  Each student has been working on their own writing goal which could include: using finger spaces, beginning with an upper-case letter, finishing with a full stop and reading our writing ensure it makes sense.

Fire Safety

Students have had their first safety visit from our local firefighters at Croydon.  Students learnt these key messages:

- know your home address in case of an emergency

- ensure you home has a WORKING smoke detector

- ensure you have a safe meeting place at your house (both mum and dad)

- GET DOWN LOW and GO GO GO should you be near smoke or a fire

- STOP, DROP and ROLL when there is a flame/fire on your clothing.

Our next fire safety visit is on WEDNESDAY 21st August.  Students will get to see how the fire truck operates.  Please ensure you've had a conversation with your child about the above safety messages.
