The Arts at Oakleigh Grammar

Ms Tracy Sarroff

Teacher of Visual Arts, Media, VCE Studio Arts

Year 7 Visual Arts

This semester, Year 7 Visual Arts students have been learning about the portrayal of life and 'Sport in Art' across different times and cultures.

After their initial research and idea development, students learned new skills and techniques to make terracotta pots using the coil method and hand building techniques.

Both the form of their pots and subject matter have been partly inspired by the Hermannsburg Potters, a renowned indigenous artist group from the Northern Territory who have a strong passion for Australian Rules Football.

Students completed analysis activities comparing the artworks by the Hermannsburg Potters with Ancient Greeks vases; their depiction of sport and everyday life many centuries ago.

It was wonderful to see our students reveal their individual ideas and experiences on their own ceramic works, which present a wide range of styles and interests. Many of which, convey as much about our life and culture as the works in which we studied.

Materials used: Earthenware, underglaze and glaze
