Sister School

Taicang Senior High School

Intercultural understanding is a competency that is given a high priority at our school.  Why?  Because intercultural interactions are a part of everyday life in our increasingly multicultural and globalised world.

One of the activities that our school organises to support intercultural understanding is our school exchange. This year, 6 students and one staff member from our Chinese sister school, Taicang Senior High School, visited for 5 days at the beginning of Term3.

Students stayed with families from our community and followed their host ‘brother’ or ‘sister’ and experienced their everyday lives, including their classes. Different activities throughout the week were organised including making lamington cakes, an AFL session and making Boomerangs.

Students were surprised at how much they learned about themselves, their family and community by hosting a student from another culture. It was a life-changing experience in their own home. Our guests also had a great time at Scoresby and made comments about how beneficial going to another county has been.

Some comments from hosting students:

“When Reiko stayed with me it was quite interesting. Mum and I went to a bunch of different shopping centres looking for stuff for Reiko and her parents. We also introduced Reiko to pavlova, Peppermint Crisps, Cherryripes, Violet Crumbles and Maltesers. Overall I enjoyed having Reiko stay with my family and I hope that she enjoyed her time with us.” - Poppy Johnston
