VCE Immunology Day - GTAC
Ten students were picked out of a hat and sent off to GTAC (Gene Technology Access Centre) to celebrate Immunology Day. Only 4 schools were picked to attend with others in and around Victoria.
This is a snippet from the beautiful report written by one of our Science Captains - Kira Hughes. The rest of the report is saved for the Salamander at the end of the year;
“The students attending were first treated to a talk from Nobel Prize recipient - Sir Gus Nossal, a distinguished Australian biologist and immunologist. From him, they learnt about various important people and how their work added to our knowledge of immunology, the basics of how immunology works in the human body, and the history of vaccinations. The talk was informative, interesting, and humorous for listeners.
Overall, the excursion to GTAC to celebrate the Day of Immunology was an exciting experience for both students and teachers. The lessons taught will aid students when they begin this unit of work while the experiment gained will hopefully motivate them to pursue a career on the field of immunology.”

VCE Ricketts Point
Just under 90 students, studying Unit 1 Biology headed off to the beach on a blustery and overcast day.
This did not dampen the spirits of the kids as they collected data for their last School Assessed Coursework (SAC) task of Unit 1.
Rummaging around in rock pools and mid tidal zones was a great way to bring students from the 4 classes together.
Information Evening
A big thank you to our awesome Science Captains Kira Hughes and Danielle Cummings for representing the school at the Information Evening on Tuesday 10 May.
Whilst Kira was mesmerised by ‘Dry Ice’ and the experiments that were being conducted by Mr Newman, I watched Danielle show Grade 4 and 5 students how to make ‘mini lava lamps’. It was a great way to see our senior students work with the next generation. Well done girls, you made the department proud.
VCE Unit 4 Biology
Melbourne University Excursion
The event has been opened on Compass and is now accepting consent and payment.
Students will collect data from the university and use their specialised equipment for the first three SAC’s of the new unit.
Please be reminded that payment has to occur three days before the excursion date and no late monies or consent will be accepted.
VCE Biology Tutiorial Groups
If you have missed a couple of classes due to extra curricular activities, it does not matter what class you are assigned to, Ms Colyer, Miss Van Hennik and Mr Vallance are always happy to go over any misconceptions or questions you have.
Please pop in on Monday lunchtimes in Room 65 and Wednesday lunchtimes in V18.
VCE Chemistry Tutorial Groups
Don’t be bogged down with misconceptions, come armed with your questions and queries and see Miss Armfield in Room 66 on Tuesday mornings from 7.45 am till 8.30 am.
Year 9 Forensic Science Incursion
Students were walked through a crime scene set up in the Hall on Monday 2 May.
They looked at the samples and tried to figure out ‘Who Done It’ for their recently completed Common Assessment Task.
Well done to all the students that took part. We were commended on our manners and attentiveness throughout the day by the presenter. Good luck with your assessment piece.
Bragg Student Science Writing Competition
Did you know wi-fi, penicillin, ultrasound scanners and Google Maps are all Australian inventions?
What do you think are the most important discoveries that have been made by Australian scientists, engineers and inventors?
Choose a great Australian invention or discovery! In 800 words or less, describe how the discovery came about, explain what it does, and discuss its importance – What does it mean for the world today and into the future?
Watch this space, Compass and the Science noticeboard for more information about this exciting opportunity.
