MATHS

Year 8 Maths - 822
This week, Mr Dekker kindly allowed us into his classroom to see what his Year 8 (822) students were up to.
The students were completing their Common Assessment Task where they were writing a journal entry about a task centre activity.
“We are doing a Common Assessment Task which involves an activity called Eric the Sheep. I’m writing up my mathematical journal today”– Emily Brisbane-Flynn
“My activity is Crossing the River. We had to find out how many times it took 8 adults and 2 children to get across the river. The strategy I used was finding a pattern” – Jamie Dean
“I was investigating square numbers. I had to write out all the square numbers and represent them in blocks. For example I would represent 32 as 3 blocks across and 3 blocks down” – Troy Sutton
“My activity was Shape Algebra. I had to find out how many x and y shapes go into a bigger shape. It was pretty hard. It helped me to use foam shapes to model the problem” – Jay Ireland
Education Week.....
Mathopoly
On Thursday 19 May the Maths department played a giant game of Mathopoly in the Hall.
There were around 60 – 80 students in attendance to brush up on their skills. Hot chocolate was given out to all participants and chocolates were up for grabs for all students who answered three questions correctly.
A big thank you to Laura Kaspar for running the event and to Kasie Van Hennik, Tony Vallance, Mark Beatson, Dean Izzard, Peter Breukers, Tim Beale and Phil Carr for their assistance running the event.
