Course Selection
Following course selection nights and subject expos here at school for students over the past three weeks students should now be entering their subject preferences on line. Students in Years 9-11 will be provided with guidelines and advice on this process with Year 9 students completing the task during journeys classes next Wednesday. The deadline for selections is on August 28th 2015. If any student needs further assistance in the subject selection process please see Mary-Ann in the Senior Study Centre at lunchtimes before next Friday. Kristy from CVGT is also available on Friday lunchtime in the careers office.
Pupil Free Day
The school will closed on Monday August 24th. This day is one of the designated pupil free days by the DEECD. Our staff will join staff from Wanganui Park SC, Mooroopna SC and McGuire and will use this day for Professional Learning activities focusing on Curriculum Development and Literacy Strategies.
Athletics Sports
On Tuesday earlier this week, the house athletics sports were held at the Shepparton Sports precinct in very cool but fine conditions. Well done to Tom Sullivan for his organisation of the day and to all staff that assisted in running the events to ensure the day was a great success.
Congratulations to Rodney House students on winning the overall team award. The students had a lot of fun participating in the events and dressing in house colours to create a friendly rivalry between houses on the day. Good luck to all those students who have qualified for the Goulburn Murray Secondary inter-school carnival to be held on Friday 4th September
Safety Issue At The Front Of The School
A further reminder to parents regarding student safety. There are still a number of parents that are parking in no standing areas along the front of the school at the end of the day, collecting their children. Students are running across the road and this practice is extremely dangerous as it interferes with the safe travel of through traffic including buses and other car travellers but more importantly the students. There have been several “near misses” lately and we are very concerned that this is an accident waiting to happen. Can we implore on parents to please use correct safety procedures when collecting your children. Parking along the front of the school is not permitted so we encourage you to park on Rae Street or Feshti St to the north of the school. Please ensure your son/daughter uses the traffic lights if needing to cross Hawdon St at the front of the school. This would overcome many traffic problems at the front of our school.
Thank you for being patient and understanding with this issue. Your child’s safety is of paramount importance to us all.
Building the Bridge between Primary and Secondary Science Grant
Recently Julie Natalizio was successful in securing a grant of $1500 from the Victorian Teachers Mutual Bank. The award recognises an innovative program to engage with the local community. The program is an initiative of Shepparton High School led by Julie Natalizio to engage students in years 5 and 6 in science. This pilot program has already been accepted by many of the local primary schools already enjoying the practical based program in our science centre throughout the first half of this year.
With the number of students choosing Science across Australia dwindling, it is recognised that Australia now has a graduate crisis which will soon affect all industries. This innovative science program aims to engage local primary school students in science and in doing so prepare them for secondary school science, building within them a passion to develop the inquiring mind and a love of science.
The grant will used to cover the cost of all materials and workbooks that are provided by Shepparton High School throughout the program. A website is being developed to assist review of the sessions, extension of work, and recapping of ideas to promote a united teaching experience between the primary schools and Shepparton High School.
Congratulations to Julie pictured below with Shane Koelmeyer from the Victorian Mutual Bank.
