Old Collegians

Where are they now?
Each month we would like to highlight an Old Collegian who has succeeded in their chosen field after leaving the College. Please send any submissions you may have to oldcolls@stbedes.catholic.edu.au
Rear Admiral Tony Dalton
AC (Tony) Dalton graduated from St Bede’s in 1979. Tony joined the Navy in 1980 and trained as an Officer and a Naval Aviator. He is currently responsible for all Australian Defence’s joint systems radar, warfare systems, radio and communications.
Tony was awarded an AM in the Military Division of the Order of Australia on Australia Day this year for “ exceptional service in the field of helicopter acquisition and sustainment in the Australian Defence Force”.
St Bede’s College was privileged to have his attend our ANZAC Day Commemorative Service in 2015
Robert Hoysted
The first College Captain in 1941
While attending the College Bob was very successful in the athletics field coming first in the Under 14 obstacle race in 1938 and a solid second in the 75 yards race!
In the early St Bede’s years, Bob was in greatest demand each Friday when the anxious punters would try and find out which of his father’s horses was a “good thing” the following day.
Upon leaving the college, Bob enlisted with the Royal Navy before following his father’s footsteps into horse racing. He prepared many fine horses during the years from 1956-1978 when he step out on his own. In 1978 Bob took over the training of Manikato after the death of his brother Bon.
Over the next five seasons Manikato won five William Reid Stakes, the Marlboro Cup, Caulfield Guineas, three C.F.Orr Stakes, four Futurity Stakes, two George Ryder Stakes, the Doomben 10,000 and the Queen Elizabeth Cup at Caulfield in the presence of the Queen in 1981. Other outstanding horses trained by Bob included River Rough, Rose of Kingston, Spirit of Kingston, Aare, Love A Show and Sydeston.
From his daughter Marilyn……. “Dad always spoke with great fondness of the Brothers who taught him, his time at St Bede’s and was very proud of having been the first school captain. We found the hand written and typed reference from B.M.J. Lennon enclosed with Dad’s birth and marriage certificates which testifies to the value he placed on the opinion his teachers had of him.”
We are privileged to be receiving from his daughters the following items for our archives:
- Bob’s AM Medal awarded to him in 1993 for “services to the racehorse training and to the industrial welfare of trainers”
- Bob and his father’s (F.W.Hoystead) Inductee to the Racing Hall of Fame medal
- Bob’s naval records and medals
- Bob’s sporting trophies and other personal items that relate to his school life
These items will be displayed in a dedicated Old Collegians cabinet to be built in the Function Room of the Sports Centre.
It is his daughters’ wishes that this very generous donation encourages our current students “to reflect on the worth of persistence, dignified consultation with those who disagree with you and the importance of moral values in the conduct of one’s life”
