'Be The Best That You Can Be'

Visit from Olympian Linden Hall in Food Tech

Food Tech classes had a special visit from Australia's fastest female 1500m track runner - Linden Hall. Linden is in preparation for Tokyo and took time to share her story and experience with food with WHSC students.

Linden spoke to students about the challenges she faced while living in Florida, especially the poor nutritional value of bread and other foods in America. What a fantastic experience for our students! Here are some of their thoughts after her visit:

"Linden is obviously an extremely talented runner as she showed in her record-breaking race. She keeps a maintained diet that helps her run very well. Even when she is in different country she manages to eat healthy and get the right food she needs. She is dedicated to running in the Olympics and we all hope to see her run in them. If she keeps on training she will go very far." Jordan G.

"Yesterday, the Australian record holder of the 1500m sprint, Linden Hall, came to visit our class. She told us about her life and the things that lead her to where she was today. She expressed her fondness for the sport and talked about it passionately. She also gave us some info on her diet and dietary requirements as an Olympic runner-in-training. She told us things such as her go to snack after trainings would be an up and go. She said during her training sessions she would also try to set some goals, and that she would always try to succeed in one of them. Most of her events run at night which means that she has to work her timetable around that which for the most part she has to do it backwards." Cassie C

"I remember how Linden was explaining to us what she eats before a race (up and go, banana) and how she trains herself in order to become a better runner. At the moment she holds the Australian record for the fastest 1.5 km run. She studied in Australia and found that it was hard for her to pay off so she moved to Florida and told us a bit about it. She told us what the differences of some foods in America compared to Australia. e.g. bread is sweeter and has a higher sugar content. She also explained to us how the packaging in America is much different to ours." Alex P

"Linden Hall, an Australian athlete, is known for her being the fastest female Australian athlete in the 1500m, this also instantly qualified her to be in the Olympics. She studied in Australia (Melbourne University) but decided to go overseas to study. She says the setting there was similar to American movies; there’s cheerleaders, jocks and frat parties. However, she was supported by her team and navigated through that challenge. She spoke about the different flavour and health of the foods in America, mentioning how the bread there is really unhealthy compared to Australia and she struggled to find a healthy one for her diet. I’m very grateful for her visit, because I learnt so much about the typical life of an athlete, the challenges she faced and her journey to get to her point now." Samantha L

STEM Class and Remote Learning

The remote learning task for the year 7 students in Ms. Takla’s STEM Materials class was to further develop their skills in Sketch Up by working on developing their own Playground design.

The task required students to further develop their design skills using Computer Assisted Design (CAD) software. Great to see the students continuing to develop their skills even while working from home!

Supply and Demand Inquiry

As Year 7 ACE Humanities worked on their collaborative inquiry, they moved to Remote Learning and took the challenge to present their assessments online. The inquiry was based on the popular television show ‘Shark Tank’ and supported student learning within the Economics Unit.

Studying ‘Supply and Demand’ the class formed groups and designed a product that they believed would be profitable for prospective investors. Using new vocabulary studied in class, the inquiry became the Common Assessment Task. Students engaged in criteria that required them to design and sell their product through advertisements and a final presentation.

The Staff Leadership Team assessed the students through a preferential voting system and students also learnt the process of counting votes on their return from Remote Learning. The class is to be highly commended for altering their ‘Shark Tank’ presentations to an online format. The class would also like to thank the members of the Leadership Team for attending and voting online.

Students are proud to announce the winner ‘CMT Stylex’. This product is an app that organises an individual’s unique outfit for the day. It caters for the wearer’s needs and tastes, the weather and current availability. Coming a close second was ‘Findet’, a product that revolutionises the purchaser’s ability to locate missing items through advanced technology. Other products included ‘Downtown Heels’, ‘Slip and Clean’, 'Magnetic Master' and ‘Chocy Chaps’. All were original creations and the presentations were engaging to watch.

Students were thoroughly enthralled in the process and assessments were of outstanding quality. Post Tests indicated improvement in vocabulary use in the subject area and the students look forward to their next inquiry in the ACE class.

Snack Bugs in Food Tech

Our Food Tech students have been busy again this lockdown! Our Yr. 8 Food Tech class have had fun creating healthy snack bugs while learning about healthy eating habits.

Students were tasked to create an enticing healthy eating snack aimed at 5-8 year old’s with the nutritional content of the snack calculated using the Nutritional Value website. Students were constrained to only using fruit and vegetables they had in their kitchen and were instructed not to buy any more food (unless there was absolutely nothing in the house).

Not only was this a fun activity for students to do during lockdown, it was a great way for students to learn about what healthy eating is and the many ways you can make it interesting and fun!
