CHILDREN'S BOOK COUNCIL OF AUSTRALIA

The shortlist has been announced and is displayed in the library.

The students have the opportunity to vote for the books which they think will win the various categories.  Much interesting discussion is generated over the front cover, captivating titles, mesmerizing back cover blurbs, inviting illustrations and so much more.

The official winners are announced on August 20th.

If you would like to have a vote in your family go to https://cbca.org.au/ for more information on the short-listed books.

READING for PLEASURE = MINDFUL READING

Here are some thoughts that caught my attention:

https://afaeducation.org/blog/mindfulness-through-reading/mindfulness-through-reading/

Jon Kabat Zinn defines Mindfulness as “Paying attention, in a particular way, on purpose, in the moment, non judgemental.

”By choosing (on purpose) to read (the particular way) and focusing (paying attention) on words in a book we are almost there in meeting his definition. When we get lost in words, we can lose track of time, our day to day thoughts, feelings, emotions and reactions are forgotten for a moment, they settle, affect us less as we are transported to another, amazing world. We don’t judge the words we just read them and accept them for what they are – (in the moment, non judgemental).

Reading can take our mind off a well trodden path of worry, stress, anxiety. It doesn’t have to be a self-help book, it can be anything that takes us away, puts us in the moment.

By distracting the mind through reading, we can build new pathways, write new scripts, which serve us in life much better, just imagine the opportunities books can open up for our children."

TERM 3 RESOLUTION:

  • My child in Kinder, Yr 1 and Yr 2 will borrow and return every week.
  • My child in Yr 3, Yr 4, Yr 5, and Yr 6 will borrow at least every 2nd week.

Thank you for your support.

SPACE TRIVIA FUN

News is coming.  Thanks to the students for their patience. An on-going project.

BOOK WEEK / BOOK FAIR  - Come One, Come All

With the current situation in mind, in consultation with the School Executive the decision has been made to continue to hold the BOOK FAIR but without parent visits.

I know you will all be as supportive of the BOOK FAIR as you were in 2020 just from a distance.

Be assured every effort will be made to make the ordering process as easy as possible for you and your child. Many more details to come.

TERM 3 WEEK 7

Book Week  at St Nicholas School / Monday 23 Aug to Friday 27 Aug - Students Only

Book Fair      in St Nicholas School Library 24 Aug - 26th Aug - Students only

Dress-up Parade    at St Nicholas School  - Students only. The event will be filmed and shared with you at home.

The theme this year is   "Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds".

The week will include the Book Fair running on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and conclude with a book week dress-up and parade on Friday.

Why do we dress up, you may ask? It brings the book, character or author to life -enhancing the whole concept of reading for pleasure, and what could be better than that.

I will be speaking with the students in the coming weeks regarding the theme and ideas for the dress-up day so that they can chat with you about possible costumes. This year the possibilities are endless. Here are some conversation starters:

  • Who or what is a favourite book character you have read about?
  • Who is a favourite author whose books you have enjoyed reading?

Think of "worlds" eg ancient worlds, magic worlds, dragons, wizards, astronauts, dinosaurs, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, futuristic Worlds, under the sea, imaginary worlds - Pokemon and explorers of other worlds.  Starting early means you may be able to keep the expense to a minimum by having students source and make their own costumes ... just a thought.

Talk to your child and have fun.

LIBRARY BAGS

Teach Resilience and Responsibility

Remind your child what day their library visit occurs then give them the responsibility of bringing the library bag to school on that day. If they miss that day explain to them, as I do, that they may bring it the following day.

We will always find time for a student to borrow.

Thank you for assisting your child in presenting with a library bag to begin the year.

Students in Year 5 and 6 may purchase a bag from the library for $1.

LIBRARY BAGS MATTER...  Not just some of the time but all of the time.

No food or drink on my books.

Food and drink are for the chooks.

Library bags keep ‘em clean.

Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.

Bring your bag every time.

Fill it up and get in line.

Have it scanned and scoot on out.
