Science News

On July 30th, some very brave students from Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 12 will attempt the International Chemistry Quiz.  They have some practice to do beforehand but it is going to take some great thinking and I applaud these students for having a go. They will receive certificates for their achievement and we wish them all the best of luck and success.

The year 8C class had a wonderful learning experience on Tuesday when Mrs Morris helped them to develop a narrative in science. They had to pretend that they were a water droplet or water molecule and narrate their journey through the water cycle.  It not only gave them a greater understanding of how water cycles around the globe but it gave them some excellent writing skills. I am looking forward to reading some great stories.

This is the revision week for the seniors who are working hard in preparation for their Trials next week. We wish them every success to reward their hard work and extensive learning.

The Year 10 student will be seriously considering their pathway either into the senior years at Marian or their workplace careers, over the next few weeks.

Any student contemplating a career in science will have the opportunity to choose from 5 sciences on offer at Marian.  Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Environmental and Investigating Science. A student can choose 7 units of science for the HSC, which is a very heavy load in the sciences and so this is an opportunity to prepare for a career with a science focus, of which there are many.

Year 9 have started their exploration of the universe and the scientific understanding of an immense universe which is expanding. This is an extremely exciting area of study given the future plans for space travel and the current news that Virgin Galactic, on 11th July, became the first company to send paying customers into space.

Year 8 are finishing their study of Earth’s precious resources and are going to start their study of Health Science.  This is a relevant topic of study given the state of the COVID pandemic in Australia. We will have well informed citizens based on rigorous scientific fact rather than fake news.

We celebrated the awards ceremony today and it was pleasing to see such big smiles as the students realised just how well they are doing at their studies.  Hopefully out common AFL program will help every student learn the necessary study skills to promote their own success and prepare them for future study and career choices.

On behalf of the science staff, I wish you all a very enjoyable weekend

Keep warm and safe

Best wishes
