Assistant Principal News

Welcome back to Term 3.

Our term started in a positive and productive manner with our Staff Professional Learning Day, Monay last week.

The Professional Learning Day was focused on Literacy and Numeracy and provided staff with time and resources to consider strategies and interventions in these areas.

For half of the day, staff worked with the Igniting Writing team of Mrs Morris, Mrs Parle, Mr Herb and Mrs Segrave to engage in a range of writing activities. The purpose was for staff to see writing from a student perspective. Our Literacy Instructional Teacher Mrs Morris presented to staff her journey and collaboration with others this year in her focus on writing, before engaging staff in our College Writing Continuum.

Staff used actual student Year 7 persuasive and narrative writing samples to develop consistent judgement and assessment of student ability in writing. Finally staff mapped student reading and writing data onto a Literacy Continuum to gain visual evidence of student learning, possible need for intervention and areas for growth.

The Numeracy Ninjas Team of Mr Seers, Ms Star, Mr Dal Nevo, Ms Davis and Mr Summerville engaged staff in a Numeracy session for the other half of the day. In this session staff were introduced to four common Numeracy strategies that can be employed in all KLA areas consistently across the College. These strategies were:

  1. Representation
  2. Communication
  3. Reasoning and Argument
  4. Strategic Thinking

Staff had these strategies modelled to them and then had the chance to participate in practical examples of the strategy.

All staff will now be given time to embed writing and numeracy strategies in their programs, and collaborate with peers from a range of KLA areas in their Professional Learning Teams.

I look forward to sharing further progress with you in the coming weeks.

Yours in Learning

Lora Segrave and Damien Herb
