ECP Literary Journal/Literární žurnál ECP

As we start making plans for next year’s Literary Festival, it was exciting to receive print copies of our first Literary Journal. This is primarily a collection of poems, short stories and illustrations which students created during the Festival this year. Have a look at some of the wonderful work in our online version!

V čase, kdy už plánujeme další ročník Literárního festivalu, jsme s nadšením obdrželi výtisky našeho prvního Literárního časopisu. Jedná se především o sbírku básní, povídek a ilustrací, které studenti vytvořili během letošního festivalu. Podívejte se na některé z úžasných prací v online verzi našeho časopisu!

IRIS Book Award/Knižní ceny IRIS

This year, five other ECP students and I participated in the Iris Bookbowl, which is a friendly, reading-based contest. We were given a list of books, which we split between us, to read during the year. On 21 May we joined five other schools online and competed in a range of quizzes against them. We also got to talk to one of the authors, Chris Vick, who wrote Girl. Boy. Sea, which was amazing. I really enjoyed the event because I was introduced to books I wouldn't normally have chosen, but still really liked, and I also got to interact with students from other year groups. The competition had a really fun atmosphere and I would recommend anyone who enjoys reading to participate next year!

Letos jsem se spolu s dalšími pěti studenty ECP zúčastnila soutěže Iris Bookbowl, což je přátelské klání založené na četbě. Dostali jsme seznam knih, které jsme si rozdělili a během roku přečetli. 21. května jsme se připojili k pěti dalším školám online a soutěžili s nimi v řadě kvízů. Promluvili jsme si také s jedním z autorů, Chrisem Vickem, který napsal knihu Girl. Boy. Sea, což bylo úžasné. Tato akce se mi velice líbila, protože jsem se dostala ke knihám, které bych si jinak nevybrala, ale přesto jsem si jejich četbu užila. Také jsem ocenila, že jsem mohla komunikovat se studenty z jiných ročníků. Soutěž měla opravdu zábavnou atmosféru a doporučila bych každému, kdo rád čte, aby se příští rok zúčastnil!

Time to Browse!/Čas na prohlídku!

It has always been easy to enjoy browsing through the wonderful selection of fiction in both Czech and English in our library - but non-fiction has always proven more of a challenge as we use the Dewey decimal system.   During lockdown, we decided to create three new sections within the library: Biographies, True Stories and Wellbeing.  The aim is to make it easier for staff and students to be able to browse the extensive selection of fascinating non-fiction books available.  Next time you’re in the library, why not browse through these sections and see if you can find something you fancy reading?   Choose from titles as diverse as Michelle or Barack Obama’s biographies, Mary's Monster (Lita Judge’s brief look into the tragic, tortured life of Mary Shelley) or The Awesome Power of Sleep by Nicola Morgan.

Prohlížení úžasného výběru beletrie v českém i anglickém jazyce bylo v naší knihovně vždy snadné - ale literatura faktu se vždy zdála být větší výzvou, jelikož používáme Deweyho desetinný systém. Během lockdownu jsme se rozhodli vytvořit v knihovně tři nové sekce: biografie, pravdivé příběhy a duševní pohoda. Cílem je usnadnit zaměstnancům i studentům procházení rozsáhlého výběru fascinujících knih dostupných v rámci literatury faktu. Až příště budete v knihovně, projděte si tyto sekce a zjistěte, zda nenajdete něco, co byste si chtěli přečíst. Vyberte si z rozmanitých titulů, jako jsou biografie Michelle nebo Baracka Obamy, Mary's Monster (krátký pohled Lity Judge na tragický, mučednický život Mary Shelley) nebo The Awesome Power of Sleep autorky Nicoly Morgan.

Eileen Griffin:

Recently I have read the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, and I loved it. The book is about a young girl, Lyra, who lives in a parallel universe. It is very similar to ours in many ways but also very different. She, accompanied by her daemon Pantalaimon, starts to look for her best friend, Roger, who has disappeared. On her way to rescue him, she learns her true parents' identities, learns to read the alethiometer and makes friendships that will last forever. You get very attached to the characters. My favourite character is Lyra because she is strange, savage, but sensitive and thoughtful. She makes mistakes along the way but learns from them, and she even manages to trick an armoured bear, which is considered impossible. The story keeps you guessing, and it feels like you're witnessing everything with your own eyes. The book is for readers of 12 years and above. By now, I have already finished the series, and I could not recommend it more. 

Nedávno jsem četl první knihu z trilogie His Dark Materials a moc se mi líbila. Kniha pojednává o mladé dívce Lyře, která žije v paralelním vesmíru. V mnoha ohledech je velmi podobný tomu našemu, ale je i velmi odlišný. V doprovodu svého démona Pantalaimona začne hledat svého nejlepšího přítele Rogera, který zmizel. Na cestě k jeho záchraně se dozví o totožnosti svých skutečných rodičů, naučí se číst alethiometr a naváže přátelství, která budou trvat věčně. K postavám budete velmi připoutaní. Moje oblíbená postava je Lyra, protože je zvláštní, divoká, ale i citlivá a přemýšlivá. Během své cesty dělá chyby, ale poučí se z nich, a dokonce se jí podaří oklamat obrněného medvěda, což je považováno za nemožné. Příběh vás nutí hádat a máte pocit, jako byste byli svědky všeho na vlastní oči. Kniha je určena čtenářům od 12 let. Nyní jsem již dočetla celou sérii a mohu vám ji vřele doporučit.

Mr Foster:

The blurb of Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay is what really caught my attention. How could a boy living halfway around the globe in the USA play a role in his cousin’s death in the Philippines? The answer is not anything you would expect, and this is revealed gradually throughout the book. It is an easy read and it was actually really nice to learn a lot about the Philippines and the problems that the country is facing even now. It is also a bit of an emotional book and the author really pulls you in!  During the last few months, I’ve also read Dracula by Bram Stoker which I really enjoyed. Despite some of it not being a typical vampire story, it delivered expectations of an exciting hunt through Europe for a blood-sucking vampire. The fact that the book is set in the 1800s makes for a much more interesting read as the men hunting Dracula have a real travelling adventure and you get an insight into how people would have travelled around in those times. I’ve also read The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta and would thoroughly recommend that.  Currently I’m reading The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater - a true story of two teenagers and a crime that changed their lives.

Upoutávka na knihu Patron Saints of Nothing od autora Randy Ribaye mě velmi zaujala. Jak mohl chlapec žijící na druhé straně zeměkoule, v USA, ovlivnit smrt svého bratrance na Filipínách? Odpověď na tuto otázku je jiná, než byste očekávali, a vše se postupně odkrývá v celé knize. Je to snadné čtení a bylo opravdu příjemné dozvědět se více o Filipínách a problémech, kterým tato země čelí i nyní. Je to také trochu emotivní kniha a autor vás opravdu vtáhne! Během posledních několika měsíců jsem si také přečetl Draculu od Brama Stokera, což mě opravdu bavilo. Navzdory tomu, že to nebyl typický upíří příběh, přinesl očekávaný vzrušující hon na krvelačného upíra po celé Evropě. Skutečnost, že se kniha odehrává v 19. století, přináší mnohem zajímavější zážitek, protože muži lovící Draculu si prošli skutečným cestovatelským dobrodružstvím a čtenář se dozví, jak by lidé v té době cestovali. Četl jsem také The Black Flamingo od Deana Atty a vřele bych toto dílo doporučil. Aktuálně čtu The 57 Bus autorky Dashky Slaterové, což je skutečný příběh o dvou teenagerech a zločinu, který změnil jejich životy.

If you enjoyed Harry Potter and having been looking for another great series ever since - it has finally arrived!  Nevermoor:The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend is the story of a girl who is cursed. Not only does the curse mean that Morrigan is blamed for every local misfortune, but also that she is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday...  I cannot recommend this book enough - it’s an exciting magical adventure that totally immerses you in the world of Nevermoor. What’s even better is that there are three books in the series so far, and Townsend plans to write 9 in total - so plenty to get stuck into and enjoy! 

Pokud se vám líbil Harry Potter a od té doby hledáte další skvělou sérii - konečně je tady! Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow od Jessicy Townsendové je příběhem dívky, která je prokletá. Nejen, že kvůli kletbě je Morrigan obviňována z každého místního neštěstí, ale také je odsouzena zemřít o půlnoci na své jedenácté narozeniny... Tuto knihu nemohu doporučit více - je to vzrušující magické dobrodružství, které vás úplně ponoří do světa Nevermoor. Výbornou zprávou je, že v sérii jsou zatím tři knihy a Townsendová plánuje napsat celkem 9 dílů - takže do série se můžete ponořit na dlouho a náležitě si to užívat!

I recommend a book by Kendare Blake called Tři temné koruny (Three Dark Crowns). This fantasy novel is gripping, full of intrigues, power plays and fights for life and love. It is about triplets - one of whom can become the Queen of Fennbirn island.  However, to do that, the other ones have to die... So which one of the three amazing women is strong enough to win - Mirabella, the fierce elemental able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers, Katharine, the poisoner who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache or Arsinoe, the naturalist who is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions? And the best part - it is only the first book so you can spend even more time with some (or all?) of those amazing characters in the next several books. On top of that, this book is also in the AR programme! 

Doporučuji knihu od Kendare Blake s názvem Tři temné koruny. Tento fantasy román je poutavý, plný intrik, přesilovek a bojů o život a lásku. Pojednává o trojčatech - z nichž jedna se může stát královnou ostrova Fennbirn. Aby to však bylo možné, ostatní musí zemřít ... Takže která ze tří úžasných žen je dostatečně silná na to, aby zvítězila - Mirabella, divoká živelná bytost, která dokáže lusknutím prstů vyvolat hladové plameny nebo brutální bouře, Katharine, travička, která dokáže pozřít nejsmrtelnější jedy, aniž by ji z toho bolelo břicho, nebo Arsinoe, přírodovědkyně, o které se říká, že má schopnost dát rozkvést nejčervenější růži a ovládat nejdivočejší lvy? A nejlepší na tom je, že je to jen první kniha, takže můžete s hrdiny - některými (nebo všemi?) - strávit ještě více čas v dalších dílech. Navíc je tato kniha také v programu Accelerated Reader!
