HM's message

It might be fair to say an end of term has never been quite so eagerly anticipated as this one. While we naturally concentrate on the students and the way they’ve managed to survive (and thrive in some cases) over the last 15 months, in a school where the majority of teachers are living outside of their home country the isolation resulting from the border restrictions has not been insignificant. Many teachers have not seen their family or other loved ones for well over a year, while at the same time working from often cramped and/or unsuitable “home-office” conditions. Parents, I know, have had challenges too but the bedrock of most of the families we have at ECP are, of course, based in the Czech Republic so the impact is a bit lower. So my message today is a “shout-out” to our teachers, how they are incredible colleagues to work with, in cooperation with our support staff. 

Like Dr. Who (if you excuse the BBC TV reference) the school has two hearts - students and teachers…. and my role is to put the very best of these together. As you know I interview all 140 or so applicants for the 80 or so places we offer. It is important to me to see that the students who are applying have some sense of the opportunities that the ECP offers, but also that they have  open and inquiring minds. So we have great students. 

The flip side of this recruiting coin - the teachers - is a different animal. We have great staff retention here - just two members of staff are leaving this year (and one is going on maternity leave) - but we still have to work very hard to get the best staff. I’ve recruited five teachers this year, but it's been hard - especially recruiting from the UK with the challenges of Brexit. Not all the best teachers come from the UK - obviously - but we work hard to maintain a strong connection between British and Czech cultures which includes having a strong group of UK teachers. 

There are two interesting initiatives in this regard. The first is a teacher recruitment brochure we’ve been working on - the photo we used here is from this brochure - showing us the best of Czech hospitality - and is authored by existing staff themselves. It is written to tempt teachers from the UK by telling stories of how great the students are at ECP and how rewarding the life is they can have here at ECP and in the Czech Republic. 

The second initiative, a more indirect one, is that next year we will be welcoming “teachers in training” directly from the UK to come and learn their craft alongside our experienced teachers. Inward looking schools would worry about the fact that students will occasionally be taught by trainees rather than fully qualified teachers. However, I would counter this and say new student teachers often bring incredible inspiration and energy and keep us “oldies” on our toes and ,of course, would never be teaching alone without one of our teachers there in the classroom to provide support. The trainee teachers will bring the very latest in British education thinking and methodologies and force us to, more consciously, think about what it takes to be a good teacher. Je na místě říci, že konec školního roku ještě nikdy nebyl tak netrpělivě očekáván jako tentokrát. I když se samozřejmě soustředíme hlavně na studenty a na to, jak se jim podařilo přečkat (a v některých případech si i užít) posledních 15 měsíců, ve škole našeho typu, kde většina učitelů žije mimo svoji rodnou zemi, má izolace způsobená restrikcemi na hranicích nezanedbatelný dopad. Mnoho učitelů nevidělo svou rodinu nebo své blízké déle než rok, přičemž často pracovali ve stísněných a/nebo nevhodných podmínkách „domácí kanceláře“. Jsem si vědom, že i rodiče museli čelit problémům, ale základ většiny rodin, které máme u nás v ECP, je fyzicky v České republice, takže dopad byl o něco menší. Dnes bych tedy rád poděkoval našim učitelům a pochválil je za to, jací jsou to báječní kolegové, se kterými se skvěle pracuje, ve spolupráci s našimi dalšími zaměstnanci. 

Stejně jako Dr. Who (omluvte, prosím, můj odkaz na BBC TV) má škola dvě srdce - studenty a učitele…. A mým úkolem je propojit to nejlepší z obou skupin. Jak víte, vedu pohovory se všemi přibližně 140 uchazeči o přibližně 80 míst, které ve škole nabízíme. Je pro mě důležité vidět, že studenti, kteří se k nám hlásí, mají určitý smysl pro využití příležitostí, které ECP nabízí, ale také to, že mají otevřenou a zvídavou mysl. Přichází k nám tedy skvělí studenti. 

Druhou stranou náborové mince jsou učitelé. V ECP máme úžasně stabilní pedagogický sbor - letos odcházejí pouze dva učitelé (a jedna další jde na mateřskou dovolenou), ale musíme tvrdě pracovat na tom, abychom nově získali ty nejlepší odborníky. Letos jsem najal pět učitelů, ale bylo to těžké - zejména nábor z Velké Británie s ohledem na výzvy brexitu. Je samozřejmé, že ne všichni nejlepší učitelé pocházejí z Velké Británie, ale usilovně pracujeme na udržení silného propojení mezi britskou a českou kulturou, což zahrnuje i silné zastoupení britských učitelů. 

V tomto ohledu připravujeme dvě zajímavé iniciativy. První z nich je brožura pro nábor učitelů, v níž jsou autory naši stávající zaměstnanci. Jejich citáty doplňují formální fotografie, ale také pár neformálních, které ukazují to nejlepší z české pohostinnosti. Tato brožura má přivábit učitele z Velké Británie prostřednictvím příběhů o tom, jak skvělé zde máme studenty a jak obohacující je život, který mohou vést zde v ECP a v České republice. 

Druhou, méně přímou iniciativou, je pedagogická praxe pro začínající učitele z Velké Británie. Společně s našimi zkušenými učiteli se příští rok budou u nás učit své profesi. Školy s úzkou vizí by se mohly obávat skutečnosti, že studenty občas vyučují spíše začátečníci na praxi než plně kvalifikovaní učitelé. S tímto pohledem nesouhlasím, protože noví učitelé studentům často předávají neuvěřitelnou inspiraci a energii, drží nás „ze staré školy“ ve střehu a navíc by nikdy neučili sami, ale vždy za podpory jednoho z našich učitelů, kteří by byli ve třídě přítomni. Začínající učitelé přinesou nejnovější poznatky a metody britského vzdělávání a přinutí nás, abychom vědoměji přemýšleli o tom, co znamená být dobrým učitelem.
