Student Leadership Team Update

An integral part of our Student Leadership Team are our Action Groups that our student leaders choose to focus on each year.  This year our students chose to focus on the areas of wellbeing, community and extracurricular activities at Auburn, establishing goals that we want to achieve in each of these areas.

The Wellbeing Action Group has successfully established the AHS Queer Coalition, called Fruit Salad, running every Wednesday lunchtime, which received a great turnout from numerous students across year levels.  This has created a safe space for students of all genders and sexualities.  This action group has also created posters about inclusive and appropriate language which correlates with our VCE Respectful Relationship session.  Next term, they are planning to get a guest speaker from Headspace and focus on R U OK ? Day celebrations in Week 9.

The Community Action Group is supporting the Senior School Expo evening by helping students to feel more confident in choosing their Senior School subjects, specifically what the demands are and what each subject entails.  They hope that this will assist students in making informed decisions about their courses for 2022.  Next term, they will also support the facilitation of this Senior School and plan some new activities such as Teacher vs Student games or House-based activities.

Lastly, our Extra-Curricular action group has made our badge point system more accessible and created a transparent spreadsheet for each student to be able to see exactly where they stand when it comes to badges.  This is a great way for students to keep track of their points so they can motivate themselves to work towards the next level of badges.  They have also worked alongside Mr. Dellorso to create a volleyball tournament which has been immensely successful with involvement from staff and students.  While this has been postponed due to lockdown we look forward to finishing this off next term.  They are also planning on starting a dodgeball competition!

This past semester we have seen each student leader sharing their ideas, creating positive change and becoming more autonomous in their achievement of the goals they have set.  A massive thank you to those who facilitated their House assemblies.  House Music and Athletics are in Term 3 and we can’t wait to see which House will win these events.  Remember, participation is key and every point counts.  We have great things coming in Term 3 so stay tuned.  We meet fortnightly in G11, students are welcome to join us!
