CHALLENGE TIME!!!!!!

Miss Condrick has found a way to share a book in a creative way and would like to set our students a challenge………

Miss Condrick challenges our students to create a ‘Bento Book Box’ that represents something important from a book or that is directly mentioned in a book that you have read.  You can use any fiction book from a picture book to a novel.  Once you have created your ‘Bento Book Box’ collection, take a photo of it and send it through to guyra-c.school@det.nsw.edu.au .

What is a ‘Bento Book Box’?

A ‘Bento Book Box’ is a fun alternative visual and creative approach to reflecting on a text.

How to make a ‘Bento Book Box’?

Arrange and take a balanced, well-composed photo of a book of your choice surrounded by 6-8 objects that connect to ideas and/or details for your book. You need to not only think about the items you are going to feature in your ‘Bento Book Box’ but how each item will look in the photo and try to include a background that reflects your chosen book. Be creative and clever about your items, the items and the link to your book does not have to obvious. Check out the photo’s for ideas of how to make your own.

You can work on this challenge as a family or create your own.  If you are unable to think of a book, join in on Miss Condrick story time zooms to get some ideas to get creative.

Student Bento Book Box

My Aussie Dad

Jack Watters (Stage 2 Rose) and Harry Watters (Stage 1 Lime) have created a Bento Book Box from one of their favourite books 'My Aussie Dad' written by Yvonne Morrison and illustrated by Gus Gordon.

My Aussie Dad likes thinking that his barbie skills are tops... Even if the snags have burst, or if he has burnt the chops! My Aussie Dad is a playful and humorous story of the jovial, the kind, the slightly embarrassing and the wholly lovable Aussie Dad.

Zoe's Rescue Zoo - The Eager Elephant

Summer Tibbs (Stage 3 Navy) has created a Bento Book Box after reading Zoe's Rescue Zoo - The Eager Elephant by Amelia Cobb and Sophy Williams.

When Great-Uncle Horace brings back lost and homeless animals from his travels around the globe, it falls to Zoe, and her mum, the zoo vet, to settle them into their new home. She's good at this, because she can understand what they say and talk to them, too. But that's a secret. In this fifth book in the series, the rescue zoo's new baby elephant is very lively and always getting into tricky situations. Then one day he gets into very hot water indeed and Zoe must use all her prowess with animals to help it.

Summer has included some great items in her Bento Book Box to recreate this book.  Well done Summer.

Emergency First Aid

Summer Tibbs (Stage 3 Navy) has enjoyed the Bento Book Box challenge and created a Bento Book Box for the Emergency First Aid - John Haines book.

Pig the Pug

A favourite among many of our junior students Pig the Pug - Aaron Blabley is a story about Pig who a Pug and Im sorry to say, he was greedy and selfish in almost every way. Pig is the greediest Pug in the world. He is ill-tempered, rude and unreasonable. When Pig the Pug is asked to share his toys, something unexpected happens ...... Hopefully Pig has learned a lesson!

Summer Tibbs (Stage 3 Navy) has used some interesting items for her third 'Bento Book Box' which link to the greedy adventures of our much loved Pig the Pug!

Out of My Shell

The back ground for this is extremely well thought out and Summer Tibbs (Stage 3 Navy) has created an amazing Bento Book Box for Out of My Shell - Jenny Goebel.

Normally, Olivia spends all year looking forward to her family's summer vacation in Florida. But not this year. Not when her parents have recently separated, and her father has to stay behind in Colorado. Olivia doesn't know what she'll do all summer without him. They've always been a pair, and she's never felt the same bond with her mother or younger sister. So Olivia plans to spend the summer laying low, and trying to ignore the hurt gnawing at her heart. But when she learns that the local sea turtle population is in serious risk of dying off because of her neighbor's poorly designed house, she knows she has to do something. She can't just watch the beautiful creatures suffer.Yet her chances of helping the turtles are slim, and she can't handle any more heartbreak. Will Olivia turn her back on her favorite animal to avoid the pain? Or will she find the courage to stand up for the turtles, and maybe heal herself in the process?

Artrageous!

Summer Tibbs (Stage 3 Navy) final Bento Book Box.

Hairy Maclary Shoo - Linley Dodd

'Stop this shemozzle, this hullabaloo! Scarper, skedaddle, be off with you - shoo!' When Hairy Maclary decides to snoop inside a parked delivery van, he's in for a madcap adventure. After a rattling, roaring ride, and finding himself far from home, he desperately tries to get back to the Dairy - creating havoc and incurring the wrath of shopkeepers, schoolteachers and passers-by along the way. Has Hairy ever caused such mayhem? Thank goodness for Miss Plum, who once again steps in to save the day!

Sophie Rumbel (Stage 1 Lime) shared with us her Bento Book Box of one of her favourite picture books Hairy Maclary Shoo.  Sophie's creation not only reflects her book but also reflects her personality and many special items that she loves.  Well done Sophie.

Lift-the-flap ABC - Jim Hodgson
