Homework

Class is extremely busy at the moment.  Year 12 students are sitting Externally Set Tasks, ATAR students preparing for exams and other classes are completing classwork and assessments as normal. Students are reminded of the importance of doing homework regularly. Homework should involve completing any unfinished classwork, undertaking additional practice of skills and revising content for assessments. The hours of prep should be the minimum amount of time spent completing homework and in busy assessment periods, students are likely to need to do additional study to complete all required homework.

Tutorials

Maths / Numeracy Tutorials – Ms Franco holds Maths tutorials every Monday evening during prep time. These are suitable for students from any year group needing assistance with Maths class work or those requiring help with numeracy who are working towards achieving their Numeracy OLNA.

Agriculture / Science Tutorials – Mr Harger has now commenced tutorials every Wednesday evening during prep time. These tutorials are suitable for students wanting help with their class work in the following subjects: Animals, Plants and Year 10 Science. Mr Harger is also available during this time to assist students with the theory components of Certificate II & III Agriculture.

Boarders need to let Supervisors know they will be attending the tutorial/s by writing their name in the tutorial book before dinner.

Day students are welcome to attend these tutorials. Prep is held between 6.45 – 8.00pm. Day students wishing to attend must let the staff member know they are planning to attend and sign in and out of the College through the normal REACH system.

OLNA

2019 Round 1 results have been distributed to students who participated in OLNA in March. Congratulations to students who have now passed one or more OLNA components.

The process the College undertakes following the release of the OLNA results each round is to:

  • Provide results to students and parents/guardians
  • Inform staff of the students’ results
  • Access diagnostics to determine the area(s) of assistance required and focus for groups of students and individuals. These diagnostics are made available to students and parents who would like them.

Students who have not yet passed the three components of OLNA will have another opportunity in weeks 7 - 10 of Term 3. Additional help is available for OLNA Numeracy through the Maths tutorials on Monday evening. Mrs Pfitzner will be speaking to Year 12 students about targeted OLNA sessions for Reading and Writing. Details of these sessions are still to be confirmed and will commence after Open Day. Year 11 students who would also like to access some additional help in these components of OLNA should see Mrs Pfitzner.

Class Activities

Science

Year 10 students have had a great start to Science this term, undertaking some interesting practical sessions to commence their studies of Biology. Making DNA from liquorice and marshmallows and extracting DNA from strawberries sounds like a lot of fun but has also helped students conceptualise the nature of DNA.

Year 12 ATAR Plant Production Systems students conducting an investigation into the effectiveness of two different pesticides at controlling white cabbage moths in a broccoli crop.
