Year 10 Camp

Year 10 Camp

In Week 4 of this term, the Year 10’s went on the long awaited and much anticipated Urban Camp to Melbourne, where we became experts at travelling on trains and trams, navigating our way around Melbourne, and experiencing the many attractions Melbourne has to offer.

The itinerary was jam packed with different dining experiences every night, as well as Ten Pin Bowling, Laser Force, The Melbourne Star, The Aquarium, a Yarra River cruise, The Shrine, The MCG, Witches in Britches, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Bounce, Escape Rooms, The Victoria Market and an insightful session on homelessness at The Big Issue.

Our beds at the Hostel were so appreciated to lay our weary heads down upon after such busy days and nights. There were some very grumpy students the night that our sleep was interrupted, not once, but twice, by faulty fire alarms, and we didn’t get to sleep until 2am (all part of the excitement that was the 2019 Year 10 camp!).

A big thankyou to Mr de Zoete Spiero for organising the whole camp, and to both he and Mrs Powlett for taking care of us in the “big smoke.”

On Monday night, eating out at a Teppanyaki Restaurant in Little Bourke St, Chinatown, where a few of us, including Mrs Powlett, were covered in egg! A very fun and entertaining experience! We then headed off to Ten Pin Bowling and Laser Force at Crown.

At Southbank after we got off our cruise up The Yarra River.

Cruising up The Yarra River.

Some of us were pretty scared about going up so high in The Melbourne Star (including Mrs Powlett) but it was all worth it to see the amazing views of Melbourne.

No one scared here on The Melbourne Star!

We went to the Shrine Wednesday afternoon and got to see many different meaningful

pieces of art and many different stories about the wars Australians have been involved in. We participated in a moving “Lest We Forget” ceremony.

On Wednesday night we dressed semi-formally, to eat at a beautiful Italian

Restaurant and then walked to Her Majesty’s Theatre to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. By the end of the night, all the girls were either holding their heels or complaining

about having sore feet. By the time we climbed the two floors to our rooms we

were tired and grumpy and ready to jump into bed.

The teachers and students looked fantastic on this night! Thanks to the teachers who came to the show.

On Thursday, we went to The Aquarium and saw many different animals; big

and small! We all had a blast.

                                                                     At the Aquarium

Also on Thursday we got to go to the MCG. Our tour guide was so sweet and even

sneaked us in to see a special artefact at the end of our tour.

We got to see where the players would get ready before games, where they came up with their game plans, and even got to see the media interviewing room. The MCG was massive

and it was amazing!

We got to go into The Long Room, which is an exclusive MCC members only venue.

Mr de Zoete would usually not be able to wear his hat in there, or any denim. Collar and ties only.

Thursday night (on Halloween), we went to Witches in Britches and had

an eventful night. Remember, what happens in Witches and Britches,

stays in Witches and Britches ;) Mr de Zoete was a very good sport that night!

This was the first of two fire alarms at the hostel at 12 30 am Friday. We were all full of energy at the start and couldn’t go back to sleep, but by the time the second alarm went off we were all cranky. Thanks for praying, Liam!

By the second fire drill we were exhausted and just wanted to sleep! Mr de Zoete certainly looks over it! We finally got to bed at 2am.

This is the Hostel that we called home for a week. We toned up the legs walking up and down four flights of stairs numerous times a day.  On the last night, hundreds of people were evacuated – twice, due to faulty alarms. Thanks MFB! We finally got to bed at 2am and got a sleep-in on our last morning.
