Congratulations to Guyra Central School students Jack Soraghan (year 9) and Lincoln Atkin (year 5) who attended the NSW CHSSA/PSSA All Schools Cross Country Championships in Eastern Creek on Friday 22nd July 2022.

Jack participated in the 15 year boys 4000m event and Lincoln participated in the 11 year boys 3000m after qualifying to attend the state championships as part of the North West squad of runners at the end of Term 2.    It has been fantastic for our students to be able to pursue their talents and participate in events such as the NSW All Schools Cross Country Championships after 2 years of cancellations.  Congratulations to both Jack and Lincoln for representing the North West region and Guyra Central School and for a very successful year in Cross Country.

Premier's Spelling Bee

On Wednesday the 27th of July, K-6 participated in the Guyra Central School Premier’s Spelling Bee. The Premier's Spelling Bee is a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage with and improve their spelling. The program includes activities that encourage students to become more confident users of language through broadening their vocabulary, and promotes improved literacy skills in conjunction with the NSW English K-10 syllabus.

Early Stage 1 commenced the Spelling Bee and did very well spelling words aloud at their first spelling bee. The Kindergarten Spelling Champion was Lachlan. Stage 1 students all had a go at spelling and there were 4 competitive rounds before Hugh Kliendienst became the Stage Champion.

Stage 2 students competed in the Spelling Bee next with several close rounds using the Junior word list. Laney Orfordhill was the Stage 2 Champion and will represent Guyra Central School at the Regional Final, which will be held online for 2022.

Stage 3 students were confident with the challenging words from the Senior List. Oakley Brazier was the Stage 3 Champion and will represent Guyra Central School at the Regional Final, which will be held online for 2022.

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the 2022 Premier’s Spelling Bee, it was great to hear so many primary students confidently spelling a range of challenging words in this year’s spelling competition.

Stage 2 student Laney Orford-hill and Stage 3 student Oakley Brazier participated in the Regional Spelling Bee on Tuesday 30th August 2022.  A full report will be featured in our next Newsletter.

University of Newcastle Science and Engineering Day

On Tuesday 26th July, a group of 22 stage 3 students traveled to Armidale  to participate in an Engineering and Science day. Throughout the day, students participated in a few different challenges. The challenges included making small bridges with paper straws and cardboard, making a tower out of the same materials, light communications, creating a Mars Rover, creating a water wheel and an activity called electropolis. After lunch they had a little science show where we witnessed a few of Newton’s laws. The final event of the day was testing the bridges with a little cart with weights then every time the cart went over the bridge if it got destroyed it's out of the competition. When completing the activities we earned points for each attempt or in some activities for each weight, these points tallied into an overall score to see which school was the winner. Unfortunately, Guyra came 7th out of all schools but we all enjoyed the day out and being able to participate in these activities.

AgQuip 2022

Our AgQuip 2022 excursion was a huge success this year and 30 students from 7-11 attended from Guyra Central School. Two almost full buses transported students and staff to Gunnedah and a fun day was had by all. Students were given instructions to visit different sites to collect information relating to their current learning programs in Agriculture. Students also spent time talking and meeting people from many different industry enterprises and viewing the latest technologies that industry has to offer. After 4 hours of exploring, students boarded the buses, tired but satisfied with our day. The bus was full of singing and laughter on the ride home and Mrs Smith is looking forward to seeing these students perform in the Snowball auditions which is just around the corner in Week 8!

Many thanks to the attending staff Mr Dave Richardson, Mr Angus Hill, Mr Jason Allwood and Mrs Rebecca Smith who enabled the excursion to go ahead and for assisting in supervising our wonderfully behaved students throughout the day.

During week 5, Stage 3 Indigo student Eli McGinty travelled to Griffith as Goal Keeper for the North West Football squad to participate in the NSW PSSA State Soccer Championships.

Eli was kept very busy as Goal Keeper for the duration of the championships playing against some very well drilled Sydney teams.  Eli's skill and hard work in the goals was recognised by his coaches and team mates and was named Players-Player for the North West squad.

Guyra Central School would like to acknowledge Eli's commitment and achievements in PSSA Soccer during 2022.  Congratulation's Eli!

Relay Team heading to Olympic Park

Guyra Central School recently attended the North West CHSSA Regional Athletics trial in Tamworth.  Mrs Rebecca Lewis and Mrs Nadine Youman accompanied our qualifying secondary students to Tamworth to participate in a range of events on a very wet, cold day. Our attending secondary students are to be commended and congratulated for their efforts and achievements in the events they participated in.

Congratulations to our Relay Team (Riley Melmeth, Rave Brazier, Oscar Atkin and Archie Dowden) who sprinted their way to victory in the 4x100m 16-year-old Relay. The team has qualified to attend the CHSSA State Athletics Championships in September.  Additionally, Riley Melmeth will compete in Discus during the Championships after achieving 1st place at the Regional Carnival.

Thank you to all our staff involved in Athletics in 2022.  A special mention to Mrs Rebecca Lewis, Mrs Nadine Youman and our attending students for enduring the wet weather and attending the North West Regional Athletics Trial in Tamworth.

Multicultural Public Speaking Competition

Regional Finals

This year, the Multicultural Public Speaking competition Stage 2 and 3 finals were held online. Elsa Kliendienst, Will Vidler, Rose Gordon got their school blazers on and delivered their speeches with expression and fluency for their video recordings for the regional final with Bronwyn Paull, Sarrah O’Hara, Jenny Vidler and Sally Johnstone.

We received individual feedback from The Arts Unit regarding the Stage 2 and Stage 3 speeches. Anthony Davy coordinates the Multicultural Public Speaking competition from Sydney. In response to the Stage 2 speeches, Anthony Davy said that Willson had one of the best delivered speeches of the regional final with a hard-hitting speech on the topic “A safe place to call home”. Willson used a high level of expression in his speech delivery. Rosie was given a range of positive feedback about her passionate and enthusiastic speech about the topic “History Matters”. Rosie conveyed her passion for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australian History.

In the Stage 3 final, Elsa Kliendienst was given excellent feedback for her speech about “Australia Day”. Anthony Davy spoke highly of Elsa’s speech “I Really, really liked your style. You were the easiest and best speaker of the day. You should give more speeches. All you should ever do is give speeches. That was incredible!”

Will Vidler’s about “Everyday Racism” was also given positive feedback from Anthony Davy who said “I Really, really liked Will’s speech. You have a great style and excellent passion for public speaking. You’re a great speaker.”

Willson McElroy and Elsa Kliendiest were given Highly Commended in their respective finals. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement Willson and Elsa! Thank you Will Vidler, Elsa Kliendienst, Rose Gordon and Willson McElroy for showing Pride, Respect and Responsibility when representing Guyra Central School in the Multicultural Public Speaking competition for 2022. We look forward to seeing your public speaking skills continue to flourish.

Project Green

In Project Green this year we have been doing really fun things. We are making blankets using crochet and knitting. We are also making survival blankets using recycled chip packets and bread bags.

We recently made gift boxes with a small gift inside for members of the community.

Thank you to Mrs Mel Lloyd, Miss Tracey Condrick and all the students that participate in Project Green at Guyra Central School.

We are having a lot of fun in Project Green and look forward to participating in our future

Project Green projects.

Statewide Merino Challenge

On Monday the 22nd of August 8 Agriculture students attended the Statewide Merino Wether Challenge in Dubbo. Students have been feeding and preparing 6 Merino Wethers for a number of months at the school farm. The wethers have been halter broken and their weights collected weekly.

The students were outstanding in their performance, sheep handling and participation during the two days of sheep judging in Dubbo. Sheep were judged for their fleece value and then their meat value. Comments were also provided on the wether's presentation which was very favourable for our school team.

Students were educated by leaders in the industry on fleece judging, wool career options , latest wool innovation technologies, meat production and processing.

Our students were lucky enough to spend an hour chatting with Mr and Mrs Roger Fletcher from Fletcher International providing our students with a wonderful opportunity to gain valuable insights into this very important industry for our area.

Due to the large number of students in attendance, only one student per school could take part in the junior fleece and hoof judging competitions. Brooke Grills, year 10, represented our school and was a "stand out" according to the overjudges Mr Tony Inder, Allendale Merino Stud, Wellington and Mr Cam Munro from Egalabra Merino Stud near Dubbo. Brooke had never judged fleeces before but came 3rd place in the junior judging, demonstrating "Superior" fleece handling skills according to assistant judge Deb Snaith, Inverell. She then went on to achieve first place in the hoof junior judging event, achieving second place overall for her judging abilities. This is an outstanding achievement for a young student competing against much older, experienced students from schools across the state.

My appreciation must be expressed for the generosity of our parents, in particular Mara and Anthony Grills for organising donated motel accommodation for our students whilst staying in Dubbo. Many thanks also to Mara Grills and Jo Dullaway for providing food and refreshments for our students whilst we travelled to Dubbo.

A BIG thank you also to Mrs Linley Ryan for her valued support in supervising students and for driving the bus.

A great time was had by all and we look forward to attending again next year.

Stage 3 Debating

On Thursday the 25th of August Will and I travelled to Nemingah for debating. We had a lot of fun meeting new people and debating with them. We had two debates, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, we were also instructed to do a general knowledge quiz. After our debate we were  given some feedback, I was told that I was a bit too sassy and to keep my sassiness until the end which was very helpful. Will was told not to link two ideas into one idea which was also very helpful to him.

Elsa Kliendienst

Stage 3 Silver

It was good to meet new people to debate against. Unfortunately

neither Elsa or I made it, but Tony Davey told us to be back next year and have another red hot shot. It was a good experience and hopefully Elsa and I get the chance to do it again next year. Congratulations to the other schools who made it.

Transient Art- Nature Mandala

Mr Carroll is our Professional Experience teacher from the University of New England. He took Stage 2 Olive outside to the k-2 playground to collect nature to make a mandala artwork in the Year 3-6 Quadrangle. We had to think about how to make it symmetrical and how to use patterns in our artwork. We enjoyed getting the materials and making the artwork itself.

Team Enterprise Project

For the last 2 terms, the year 11 & 12 work studies class has been working on a Team

Enterprise Project. This has involved them making decisions on products to sell, and in the process they have had to learn how to cost items effectively to make a profit. They have learnt about profit and loss, ordering, creating a logo and a team name. They have called themselves the D Team.

The team all developed their own logo and then each one was voted on, with the winner being Tristan Bull. His logo depicts a snowflake for the cold weather in Guyra, with the D Team name. They called themselves the D Team for Mrs Doyle.

The students have learnt valuable communication skills, presentation skills and are now onto the making of the products for distribution. Today the first of the cakes were delivered to very happy customers.

The D Team have decided to donate any profits that they make to the CWA Ukraine appeal.

We thank the school community for their support.
