Plastic Free July
This month is Plastic Free July. Plastic Free July is a global movement to bring attention to the global plastic problem.
At FPS, we want to do our part. Moving forward in our journey to become environmentally friendly and sustainably aware, we will be recognising our first FPS Plastic Free Awareness Week this week.
Your child will be participating in short activities in their classrooms highlighting the importance of reducing waste. Activities include:
- Writing Plastic Free July pledges.
- Learning about recycling soft plastics and the importance of the REDcycle program.
- Reading A Planet Full of Plastic, by Neal Layton and Stanley Swallowed a Plastic Bag, by Sarah Roberts.
- Designing mascots to promote Plastic Free July.
- Calculating the amount of plastic we use each day.
- Discovering alternatives to single use plastic.
At the end of this week a display of Plastic Free July pledges will be on show near the library. We encourage you and your child to pop by and read all of the various ways that we will try and reduce our plastic use.
We are already doing so many things at FPS to do our part in reducing waste and we look forward to moving forward in this journey. Current initiatives include:
- Eco Club. Eco Club meet each Monday lunchtime and are currently working on creating short films to explain the different uses of the bins.
- Nude Food Fridays.
- Recent introduction of yellow recycling bins in the yard.
- Five bins per classroom (landfill, paper recycling, commingled recycling, compost and soft plastics).
- Eco Hub near the office (recycle bottle lids, textas, pencils, bread tags and batteries).
- Litter and waste audits.

Keeping the Grounds Clean!
Stella H, from class 3D, was on an environmental crusade across these past school holidays.
Every time she played basketball at the school over the holidays, Stella would compile and dispose of a collection of rubbish from around the grounds.
Thanks for helping look after FPS Stella!
