Djilba: time of transitions

Oil paint on wood

Throughout Australian history Aboriginal culture has experienced repetitive endeavours by British colonisers to obliterate the existence of First Nations people. Multitudes of actions were taken in history as an attempt to have an all-white Australian culture.  Destroying traditional land, culture and language.

My subject Rickeeta Walley acts as a clear symbol of hope in today’s society as a strong independent Noongar women who continues to practise and teach the customs and traditions of her Aboriginal culture. Ricky, in her daily life, generously shares her traditions, language, and culture with hundreds of students. Ricky also participates and performs in various other traditional practises of her culture such as song and dance.

I painted Ricky with flowers in her hair and with an outlined border of flowers in a halo surrounding shape of Ricky’s head of wattle, Geraldton wax and banksia. These flowers are all representative of the Noongar season of Djilba. Djilba is a colourful time due to an abundance of wildflowers emerging with the warmer days, it is one of the six seasons in the Noongar culture extending from August to September and is the start of the massive flower blooming experienced in the Southwest of Australia.

I wanted to capture Ricky as her true identity and with such rich meaning with her traditional flowers, face and body painting and the rawness of the circular wood and lack of clothing, exposing her rawness and vulnerability in exposing herself and her roots in her culture. The eyeline of Ricky looking directly almost slightly down onto the viewer is highly intentional for the effect of empowering the subject and also provoking a direct emotional response from the viewer.  Ricky is a proud Noongar woman.
