The Tale of Despereaux

Attending this week’s Year 4 Musical, was an absolute delight. The talents of our students and their capacity to learn their parts and be so creative on stage made for a very entertaining evening. Our Producer and Director, Ms Sasha Cattapan, is to be commended for guiding our students so skillfully, and for ensuring all students had an opportunity to shine. At the end of the Musical, Ms Cattapan explained that the students were keen to perform the show after reading the Tale of Despereaux last year. It is brilliant that our students can be so inspired by what they read.

“Let us persevere in running the race.”

I read a lovely reflection from Jesuit Priest, Fr Tom Scirghi, this week. He compared faith to running a race. A true disciple is like a long-distance runner. And if you’re running a race you need to persevere. ‘Perseverance’: it’s not just for Christians; it’s for everyone. Perseverance: to maintain your purpose in spite of difficulties or obstacles; to continue steadfastly.

Our Year 4 students are to be commended for their perseverance. For some students, the opportunity to perform in front of family and friends is an absolute thrill. For others, I am sure it is mildly terrifying. Of course, when errors are made it is often the time for even more learning to take place.

Whether our students are preparing for their studies, drama, music, sport or Magis, the capacity to persevere is so important. Unless they are professional athletes, marathon runners often don’t ask each other their time; the runners run because they want to finish the race.

It was St Paul who wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. We need to persevere in running the race of life and that quality was very much on display with our Year 4 students this week. Congratulations to our year 4 students, staff and parents for a superb celebration.
