Are We There Yet?

This term the Year 1 and 2 Community have a focus on Sustainability and place. Their unit ‘Born in a special place - how am I connected to the special places around me?’ is helping the students to understand that people care for places they feel a connection to. Over the course of the term, the students will learn about some of the special places in Victoria, man-made, natural and managed environments, and create a presentation about a place that is special to them and how they can care for it.

Last week, the Learning Community read the book Are we there yet? A journey around Australia By Alison Lester. 

“The year I turned eight, Mum and Dad took us on a trip around Australia. Luke, Billy and I missed school for the whole winter term. Join Grace and her family on their adventurous and sometimes funny expedition.”

While reading the book, each class discussed what facts were present in the story. They then annotated a map of Australia using Post-its with facts as they identified them. This was completed as a whole class and in small groups during Reading. Along the way, the students found out a lot of information about Australia and the many unique places we have.
