TERM 2: WEEK 4
This week I would like to focus on sleep. Falling and/or staying asleep at night is a common problem for children, teenagers and adults. It is certainly an issue that has been frequently raised with me when talking with children and parents.
Some research suggests primary school children should average approximately 10 hrs sleep/night although this may vary depending on age and body type. Generally if your child finds it hard to wake up in the morning or feels tired and sleepy throughout the day, then it might be they are not getting sufficient sleep at night.
If your child is experiencing sleep problems here are some strategies that might be helpful:
- Start the day with a healthy breakfast
- Encourage physical activity and exercise throughout the day
- Keep caffeine drinks away from your child from late afternoon/evening eg. Tea/coffee/coke/energy drinks.
- Ensure your child has a satisfying evening meal; but not too close to bedtime.
- Create a positive regular bedtime routine.
- Teach your child how to relax their body; explore some mindfulness exercises for children.
Getting sufficient sleep is important for good emotional wellbeing, behaviour and concentration. If you would like to learn more about children and sleep including additional strategies to help if your child struggles with this issue you could try the following websites:
