Information and updates for the whole Emmaus community

Back to school asthma warning

Among pre-school and primary-school-age children, rates of asthma-related hospital visits are highest at the start of the school year. This may be attributed to an increase in exposure to new asthma triggers in the school environment, respiratory viruses and hightened anxiety about adjusting to changes at school.  Another factor may include possible changes to asthma management regimes which may have relaxed over the summer holidays.

It is therefore important for schools, teachers and parents/caregivers to be prepared and ensure that effective asthma management is in place. Asthma Care Plans should be reviewed with your doctor every 12 months and whenever there is a change in your child’s health. A blue reliever puffer and spacer should be supplied to the school.

Please view the below Back To School Checklist to see what should be in place for the care needs of your child.

Asthma Australia provide excellent services of information and support for people living with asthma and parents caring for children diagnosed with asthma. I encourage you to take the time to contact Asthma Australia or visit their website as per the details below:

Premier's Reading Challenge

In 2023, the Premier’s Reading Challenge celebrates 20 years. Emmaus has had great participation in the PRC over these 20 years, with the majority of Junior School students completing the reading challenge.

The Challenge is open to all students from Foundation to Year 12 and we have many students across the College receiving Reader for Life Certificates, right up to 13 years of participation. The Challenge is happening again this year with the added test of reading 20 books instead of 12.

All students in the Junior School have been allocated their Record Sheet through their class teacher in Junior Primary (F-2) or Google Classroom for Years 3-6. Junior Primary students complete their challenge within their class. Year 3-6 students complete theirs individually with encouragement from their class teacher and parents.

Students in Years 7-12 are encouraged to complete their challenge and need to download their Student Record Sheet from either the Premier’s Reading Challenge Website or the Notices in SEQTA. All completed forms must be returned to the Library either electronically or in hardcopy by 8 September 2023.

We look forward to having a record number of students complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2023.

Register to volunteer at Emmaus Christian College in 2023

Partnering with our parents is integral to driving our mission to inspire young people by providing excellence in education within a caring Christian community.

This year brings renewed hope and anticipation with opportunities to strengthen our community and a full calendar of student experiences, camps and exciting learning opportunities. We are grateful to God for this!

We want to extend the invitation to all Emmaus parents to participate in our College life and volunteer in any way you can throughout the year. There are many ways you can be involved this year, even if it is only for a short time or a once-off. For example:

  • Sports Days and Carnivals such as SACSA
  • Classroom learning support and reading
  • Excursions and camps
  • Library assistance - covering books
  • South Plympton Canteen
  • The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) - A student-centred mentoring program that supports, guides and enriches the wellbeing and learning outcomes of their students from Foundation to Year 6.
  • School Sport Team assistance including: team managment, coaching, team transport, scoring, umpiring, training supervision, etc
  • Supporting Music or Drama Productions
  • Community and parent events

If you are interested in volunteering at Emmaus this year, please register your interest here.

You will then receive all the information about the induction process including the volunteer agreement form. Your details will be kept securely, centralised by our College and we will then direct you to the appropriate department or teacher.

If you have already arranged to volunteer this year, please register via this short form, so we can send you our updated policy and volunteer agreement documents.
