Visual Art
The Term 1 Unit of Inquiry is called 'Art Elements', which integrates with the Transdisciplinary theme- 'How we organise ourselves'. Looking at the Concepts of Function and Causation, the students focus on - line, mark making, pattern and colour, through the use of a variety of art materials.
Students Participate In-
Experimenting with mark making and line drawing. The students explored marks made by the side and other parts of the oil pastel to create Tibetan Butter Sculptures, inspired by ‘Losar’ the Tibetan New Year. The students designed, painted and incorporated their experimental mark making to add a decorative element.
Colour mixing Primary Colours to create Secondary Colours- Introduced with colour books ‘Vashti’s Dot’ and ‘Colours’. The students experimented and explored colour mixing and shape with a variety of art materials.
They used the result from the colour mixing experiment to collage and draw a final artwork, inspired by the Spanish artist Miro.

Music
Unit Of Inquiry
'How We Organise Ourselves' and 'Who We Are'
Focus
To establish class routines and learning, by encouraging an attitude of participation and independence and also care for each other.
Students will increase their knowledge of music as the elements of Beat, Pitch, Dynamics and Tempo are introduced.
The Students Will
Understand how music affects our emotions and how different music may affect thoughts and behaviours.
Sing songs related to the unit of inquiry: e.g. The Sharing Song, The Marching Song and Look This Way.
Investigate ways to improve their singing and play instruments correctly.
Take part in action rhymes and games where each child has a leadership role.
Show respect by learning to look after classroom instruments.
Demonstrate correct behaviours for being a “performer” or “audience member”.
Learn new music vocabulary.
Listen and respond to music through movement.
Listen and appreciate music from different cultures.
Library
Introduce the library setting to the children and discuss what a library is used for.
Introduce parts of a book (title, cover, call number, spine, title page, author and illustrator.)
Increase the children’s literature awareness and appreciation with stories and follow up discussions.
Identify the ‘Picture Fiction’ area and how to browse, borrow, and return a book.
Discuss the importance of library bags.
Discuss how to put books away – alphabetical order, front cover facing, correct way up.
Bring the children’s attention to the Library Essential Agreement.
Read ‘Billy and the Big New School’ by C&L Anholt and discuss the areas of school, incorporating Preps Unit Of Inquiry ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ - 'Schools are organised to help us learn and play together'.
PE Program
The term one unit we are focusing on is 'How we organize Ourselves'.
Focus: PMP and group work
Students are introduced to groups, working as a team, organising themselves to move from one activity to another Spatial awareness, balancing, hand/eye and foot/eye coordination, general fitness and eye tracking.
Students will be a part of our Perceptual Motor Program and undertake a varied number of activities that are introduced and reinforced weekly to maintain brain and body connection. Some activities are-balancing on wobble boards, moving through shapes, memory cards, crawling patterns, bilateral movements and tracking bean bags and watching the ball.
Concepts: Function – understanding how we can move our bodies to enhance our learning.
