SAKG NEWS

Welcome back! We are hoping that everybody had a lovely summer break and are excited about our return to school and all that 2023 has to offer.

The school year has kicked off with Grades 1-6 in both the kitchen and garden.  In the kitchen, students have been working in small groups making zucchini slice, bruschetta and apple & rhubarb muffins, using our school grown zucchinis, tomatoes, herbs and rhubarb. In the garden students have been familiarising themselves with the different areas of the garden, tool safety, different stages of growth for a zucchini (e.g. leaves, flowers and the fact it is a fruit) and harvesting garlic. Students have also been performing the regular chores around caring for the chickens and guinea pigs and this week will start planting lettuce seeds into punnets which will be placed in the hot house for some ideal conditions to start growing.

Just a couple of notices to remind families of what else our kitchen and garden program have to offer.  The garden is open for students to come and explore every lunchtime.  This maybe to help with watering, digging/preparing garden beds, weeding, catching butterflies, cuddles for our guinea pigs and chickens, plus so much more. Please come and join our garden leaders Kaylee R, Ella W and Stephanie G as they will guide and help students around the garden.

To assist with the smooth running of SAKG program we do require the support of volunteers. We welcome everyone, whether it be new parents/families or ones who have been at the school for several years. To be able to volunteer you will need to have a current Working with Children Check (Volunteer Card – free) which is available online and to complete an induction (information) session which we run here at school.  If you are interested in volunteering in the program please contact Mrs O’Brien, Kate, Lyn or see the ladies in the front office.

And lastly we would like to say a big thank you to the DASH team, the Nissen and Hickingbotham families and Rob and Mickey (Charlotte S' grandparents) for caring for the animals and watering the garden over the summer break.
