Spotlight on Humanities

What's been happening in the Humanities classroom?

VCE - Legal Studies (year 12)

In Legal Studies Unit 3, students have been focusing on the Victorian Criminal Justice System. This topic explores key knowledge areas such as key concepts of criminal law, the rights of the victims and accused, institutions available for the accused such as Victorian Legal Aid and Community Legal Centres and much more. Due to the interesting nature of these topics, students have had the opportunity to collaborate with peers and facilitate enriched discussions in class as well as examine VCAA Examiner Reports to further support their learning and prepare them for the end of year exam. Students have just completed their first SAC of Unit 3, Outcome 1 which has been a positive and successful experience.

Year 12 Business

Management

It has certainly been a busy start for our future entrepreneurs and business leaders studying Year 12 Business Management. In a number of case studies and hypothetical scenarios using organisations such as Qantas and Edgars Creek Secondary College, students provided advice on the possible legal structures of a business and developed strategies to support businesses as they work towards achieving their objectives. Students also explored the impact managers have on a business, particularly in relation to their management style and the skills they need to be effective.

Following the completion of their first assessment task, students commenced learning about human resource management, with a particular focus on motivation. This is particularly relevant for our students, as they work towards achieving their own goals in 2023.

Year 10 Selective  - Notorious

In Year 10 Notorious, students have been learning about “what makes a criminal?”. Students have explored various explanations for criminal behaviour such as nature versus nurture, social learning theory, Eysenck’s criminal personality theory and psychopathy (anti-social personality disorder). Students have also explored how the brain may play a role in criminal behaviour by exploring the effects of frontal lobe and amygdala damage as well as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) on impulse control, emotional regulation and aggression. Students have enjoyed analysing real life case studies and using their understanding of the various explanations for criminal behaviour to dissect and discuss the motives and actions of infamous criminals such as Ted Bundy, Aaron Hernandez and Charles Whitman. Over the next couple of weeks, students will be learning about the investigative technique of criminal profiling, where they will use their knowledge and skills to complete their first Common Assessment Task (CAT) for the subject.

Year 7 - Place and Liveability

In Year 7 humanities, we are starting with Geography, in our unit called Place and Liveability. During this unit, students will be exploring what makes a place liveable and suitable for different people. We will explore the difference between facilities and services and categories them in terms of; Environmental, Access and Security, and Recreational. Meanwhile, students will learn mapping conventions and elements of BOLTSS. To put this knowledge together, students are building their own Minecraft towns or creating posters of their municipality. In these towns students will include a variety of environmental, accessible, secure, and recreational services and facilities. They will have to justify why they included them and how they help to make their towns liveable for those living within them.
