Middle School Report

Message from the Middle School Assistant Principal

It has been a fantastic start to the school year for our Middle School students. The transition programs across Middle School at the beginning of the term allowed an opportunity for our students to connect to their peers and the college.

The Year 7 Meet and Greet was certainly a highlight and it was great to see so many of our families attend and for the opportunity to meet each other in person. We will certainly look to further these opportunities throughout the academic year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our families for your ongoing support and we look forward to our Middle School students taking every opportunity to continue their learning growth and connectedness to the college.

Year 7

Congratulations to the Year 7 cohort for a smooth transition and settling right in to the first few weeks of term 1! It has been a positive start, with students navigating their way around from classroom to classroom, opening and closing their locks and building friendship within their home group. It has been fantastic to see the students getting to know their teachers and participating in some interesting activities, including stress ball making and completing the Bunsen burner licence.

Over the last three weeks students have started to collect merit cards for their positive efforts in home group. This includes being on time, having all learning materials for period one and 2 and being in the correct uniform. Students now have the opportunity to trade these merit cards in for a reward. Some of the rewards include use of the gym with their friends, canteen vouchers or an ice cream. The Year 7 team is really looking forward to rewarding the positive behaviours we are seeing!

The Year 7’s started this term with two presentations to support their transition, learning and growth. Headspace presented ‘Beyond Primary School’ to discuss the big transition the students have been facing with starting secondary school and what feelings can arise and where to seek support. Students then had a presentation by Victoria Police on CyberSafety, covering the importance of being safe online, how to protect themselves and what to do if they find themselves in a difficult situation. Throughout both presentations, the students showed great interest and asked some great questions to further their understanding.

It was great to see a number of Year 7’s that stayed after school on Wednesday and participate in the volleyball club. This provided an environment where the Year 7’s were able to interact and participate with other students from different year levels while having a heap of fun!

A big congratulations to the Year 7 girls and boys volleyball teams who won all their games and made it through to the next stage! What an effort! We are all really proud and excited to see what can happen in the next round!

We would also like to congratulate the following students and are looking forward to seeing their contributions to building the culture at ECSC:

Year 7 SRC Members:

  • Ela de Leon from 7B
  • Chloe Nicolaou from 7G
  • Aarav Malla from 7F
  • Amber Sansome from 7E

Just a reminder that students are required to wear black leather school shoes. We are finding that a number of students are wearing runners with their summer uniform. If your child is wearing the incorrect footwear, home group teachers will be reaching out to touch base.

Thank you,

Belinda, Kaitlyn and Lucy (Year 7 team)

Year 8

Thank you for the support in helping your child transition back into school this year.

Overall, the year 8 students have done an amazing job getting back into school.

We would like to thank all the parents and carers who have provided their child with the uniform and resources for learning and we are impressed with the standard being set across year 8. Feedback from staff is that year 8 students are showing the school values in class and the yard, which is fantastic!

A friendly reminder that phones should not be out during school hours and that air pods and/or earphones are not to be worn at school.

This year we have 6 different clubs running that we encourage students to attend to keep themselves entertained or out of the heat during lunch times. Information for students is provided during homegroup.

Year 9

Well done to the year 9's for a smooth transition and have settled in well so far in finding their steps as the Middle School Leaders. It has been a positive start, with many year receiving House Points as a reward for thier achievements thus far.

For the first time, Year 9's have been doing Electives. It has been fantastic to see the students getting to know their teachers as well as engaging in challenging tasks in thier electives. Popular electives are: All Systems Go, From Behind the Lens, Around the World in 80 Bites as well as The Science of Food.

Students have also had Victoria Police come in and present on CyberSafety, explaining the importance of being safe online, how to protect themselves and what to do if they find themselves in a difficult situation. Throughout the presentation, students showed the school value of Respect All as well as during question time, they asked questions respectfully and listened to the answers with intent. They should be proud of how they behaved during this presentation.

Starting this week, students will be participating in the Merit Award System. This will be rolled out during Electives, where they will receive vouchers for showing the school values. They can redeem these vouchers for a range of awards such as early access to the canteen, frozen cokes, take away lunch etc.
