Ich lerne Deutsch

(I learn German)

Learning another language is like peeking through a window into another part of the world; giving a different perspective, and awareness beyond ourselves and the way we communicate on a daily basis.  Second language learners are creative thinkers, asking questions to further their knowledge and spark their interest in other people and places. Considering how to interact and communicate encourages empathy as well as refined listening skills and working memory.   We get an opportunity to speak but also appreciate, understand and acknowledge traditions as well as cultural differences and similarities.

Learning intentions

Students will:

  • make connections with English and their own first languages: vocabulary, language concepts and structures
  • develop an understanding of other languages and share the language learning experiences they already have
  • consider where we are in the world and where German is spoken
  • engage in oral interactions to experiment with language, listen and respond
  • use language in context through familiar routines, games, songs and repetition
  •  introduce themselves and their peers
  • use simple sentences to describe
  • engage with numbers to support number sense and Maths learning
  • learn vocabulary relating to themselves
  • be introduced to significant traditions in German relating to starting school

Each class has one 50 minute German lesson each week with Frau Edwards.

Monday (R8, R9), Wednesday (R7)
