The Arts

The Arts curriculum comprises five subjects:

Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts. Our Arts Curriculum will be taught through our focus InitiaLit storybooks. Each storybook will go through a 2-3 week cycle and a variety of Arts experiences will occur.

In Visual Arts, we will be exploring different mediums such as paint, crayons, and pencils. We will experiment with different techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks. We will create and display artworks to communicate ideas.  Visual arts will be a part of our Discovery Time in the morning and shared Activity Board. Visual Arts will be closely linked to other curriculum areas.

We will also sing songs and dance as part of music.  We will explore, improvise and organise ideas to make dance sequences using the elements of dance. We will use fundamental movement skills to develop technical skills when practising dance sequences We will watch others dance and respect those around us when they are dancing.

In Drama, the children will take part in purposeful dramatic play focusing on experiencing the roles and situations they create. They will take turns in offering and accepting ideas, and staying in role in short improvisations. They will use role play to act out familiar events or stories.

In Media Arts, we will use technology to record images for others to view.

Design and Technology

Design and Technology will also be taught through the InitiaLit storybook. Dream, design, plan, edit, make and revise will be the process we use. Students will be builders, creators, makers and engineers and have the opportunity to design and make anything from houses to a rocket.

Through exploration, design and problem- solving, students learn how technologies work.

In Design and Technologies students design and create solutions to challenges through structured play and discovery, by safely using materials and equipment.

There are three stages to Design and Technology. The first is researching an idea and the second is thinking about and wondering how you can put this idea into motion. The third is planning and designing your idea, considering the equipment and materials you might need and the last component is critiquing what has been created.

During the first semester, we will read the following stories to help inspire us to design, make and create and we cannot wait to share our new learning.
