On Thursday 9 February we celebrated the Opening College Liturgy for 2023. This was an opportunity to commission Mr Greg Miller as College Principal and formally welcome him to the Chev community. The commissioning ceremony was conducted by the Australian leader of the MSCs, Father Chris McPhee.
We also welcomed the new students and staff to the college with a blessing, which invites each of us to support one another as members of the Chevalier faith learning community:
We welcome our new students and staff into the Chevalier College family.
We encourage you all to cherish your experiences and opportunities.
And in the words of the Prophet Micah:
In all that you do here -
May you act justly,
May you love tenderly,
And may you walk humbly with your God.
We commit ourselves to walking with you on this journey.
- Sacred Heart of Jesus, we place our trust in You.
Father John Mulrooney led the meaningful and joyful celebration of Eucharist. The spirit felt and the reverence shown by students during Mass were alive and well in the hearts of all present.
High Achieving HSC students from the Class of 2022 and former Principal Mr McDermott were welcomed back for a recognition ceremony and morning tea.
Sharing the exciting next steps of the high achieving 2022 cohort presented our student body with examples of how hard work and dedication to studies can lead to achieving your long-term career and life goals.
Whilst 2022 Dux Daniel Bramley couldn’t be with us in person, his video reiterated that hard work and the support of the teachers were pivotal to his success. The long-term work of teaching staff that led to excellent results in 2022 was also recognised.
Our Ash Wednesday ceremony was held on 22 February, with a gathering of the whole school. The focus for the service was to acknowledge the start of Lent and launch Project Compassion.
Most religions have a time of reflection. For Christians it is Lent, where we are reminded to reflect upon the kind of person we are called to be.
As a symbol of our solidarity during Lent to act with hope, kindness, and hospitality, we all received the sign of the cross on our foreheads with ash. This ritual symbolises putting aside all things that stop us from sharing the best version of ourselves with others, and aways being mindful to act out of love.
Fr John shared a quote from 'The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse' by Charlie Mackesy.
The mole said to the boy: “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
“Kind” said the boy.
Our major Social Justice fundraiser for Lent is Project Compassion. Conducted by Caritas Australia, Project Compassion is a global organisation which reaches out to support people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world. Each Home Room class has a Project Compassion box and a class poster with a QR code which links to the Chev fundraising drive for Project Compassion.
Please be a part of our fundraising campaign by using this QR code to donate to Project Compassion:
At the start of the school year, each student received a diary. As a Catholic school in the MSC tradition, we take time each day in our Home Rooms to reflect on what it means to live the Gospel message: how to enact our faith in ways that enrich our lives and give life to others. The College Prayer, which we say each Friday, and an extract from the MSC Constitutions have been glued into each student’s diary as reminders that we are all invited “to be on earth the heart of God.”
Chevalier College Prayer
Loving God,
We ask Your blessing as we begin this new day and we thank You for the gift of life.
Make us strong in faith, so that at all times and in all places we may be witnesses to the love of Jesus.
Help us make this love real in the kindness and forgiveness we show and the generous service we give.
Help us face with courage the challenges of
following Jesus.
May we be ready for all the sacrifices that you will ask of us this day and throughout our lives.
In faith and hope and love we say:
Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You.
Ours is a spirit of family,
and a spirit of true friendship,
formed by kindness and understanding,
by compassion and mutual forgiveness,
by gentleness, humility and simplicity,
by hospitality and a sense of humour.
