Technology in Torrens

Technology

It's an exciting innovation that LNPS rolls out chrome book devices to Year 3 students.

This means that all students in Torrens now own their own device and can personalise their learning. Being connected is a vital part of our world as it provides anywhere, anytime access to information and connects people within communities far and wide. There is a wonderful array of learning tools available to our students and teachers. However, there are associated rights and responsibilities.

Parents and teachers need to work together to oversee and guide children in establishing safe ethical behaviour while using devices and whilst online.

Safer Internet Day (SID) 2018 on Tuesday, 6 Feb  2018  used the theme -

"Create, connect and share respect:

A better internet starts with you"

and saw the Year 3 students receiving their new devices.

Two days later, two visiting SAPOL officers from Sturt Police Station spoke with Torrens students about the necessity to be safe online which was very  informative and timely.

As a school we promote, encourage and expect

                 DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP:

1. Respect yourself and others

2. Protect yourself and others

3. Follow Intellectual Property (IP) and

     Copyright rules

Throughout the year, students will continually build onto their digital literacy, skills, knowledge and dispositions to become safer and responsible digital citizens. Themes used will include -

  • Engaging positively,
  • Knowing your online world and
  • Choosing consciously.

With greater online time and access to a wide variety of programs and apps, students will be required to manage their own accounts and passwords. Obviously this is a gradual process and often the initial set up is with generic or predictable passwords. School values (respect and honesty) and digital citizenship principles (respect) are under scrutiny ..... and memories and patience put to the test! In reality, this is all part of the learning process and a vital stepping stone in developing knowledge, skills and dispositions.

Families and students are reminded devices are

  • brought to school daily
  • charging is a responsibility for home
  • students are sole user of device
  • device and case needs to be clearly named

During Week 4 students will be asked to clarify their understanding of acceptable use of their devices, school equipment and the internet.

AUP (Acceptable User Policy)Forms for 2018 will be distributed and discussed in class and come home for endorsement.
