SJDGA Barnbougle 2019 trip report

The seventh annual SJDGA was held on 11/12/13 of October back at its traditional home on the north east coast of Tasmania, Barnbougle.

This year’s event saw a field of 35 take to the fairways and compete for the illustrious Brown Jacket individual award and the revered Gettysburg Shield team event. Two time winner and perennial Brown Jacket favourite, Tim Webb was a late scratching for the event, whilst his company was sadly missed by all, his quality and consistency was a major blow for the South leading into the competition.

On arrival on the Friday, we were once again greeted by near perfect golfing conditions at Barnbougle Dunes, meaning there were no excuses for the pro am and bringing the long handicappers into favouritism. This turned out to be the case with Marcus Doherty, hitting 300 metre drives and using a handicap of 36 (bandit), comfortably getting the chocolates. The Gettysburg team event also got underway on the Friday, this was a close run affair with the North shading the South 5 points to 4 points at the end of the day.

Saturday  saw the bus trip across to Lost Farm for the commencement of the Brown Jacket competition and day 2 of the Gettysburg. The South were very confident the day would follow recent history and see the Red’s dominate Lost Farm. The Blues from the North started on fire winning the first four matches, but the South fought back late, with the day finishing with a 6 to 3 win to the North, this Southern rally may have been too little, too late. The Brown Jacket saw pro am winner (handicap bandit) Marcus Doherty sent out as favourite, but the Friday tote money suggested it was to be a very wide open event. Jamie Pfahl was leading the Brown Jacket with 39 points, Michael Webb with 37 points, and four in third on 35 points.

The Saturday in the sports bar, leading into Saturday evening was a highlight of the weekend, which culminated in the now famous Chris Dodd Calcutta. The room was electric, with different syndicates summing up the golf flesh and deciding where to invest. With prizes to be won at both ends of the leaderboard the potential Brown Jacket and NAGA winners were highly sought after, so the money came thick and fast for the for the Rolls Royce (Matt Stein), Marcus Doherty, Paul Digney and Winx (aka Michael Cunningham). It should be noted that as one of our brethren, Hamish Rodgers Wilson, returned to Barnbougle after having his health challenges this year, which we and Barnbougle were so chuffed to see him there in such fine fettle – so Barnbougle promised to donate to Peter Mac hospital, for every player who grew a moustache for the trip, some were better than others, with Dave Picking being voted by staff to have the best tash. True to their word, Barnbougle have committed to donate A$1500 bucks, which was seen and raised when our Calcutta auctioneer Doddy, suggested all players should match their commitment and throw in $50 per head, so an extra $1800 is going to such a worthwhile charity. What a great endorsement for the generosity of the St James community.

Sunday, looked to be a mere formality in the Gettysburg Shield with the North holding a substantial lead, in fact it was rumoured it was already sent to the engravers, however the Brown Jacket was wide open with Jamie Pfahl taking a one point lead into the days play, with Michael Webb in close attendance and the Rolls Royce, Winx, pro am winner and Mat Bennett a further two back – in all there was a third of the field within seven points, which is the most in contention at this point of the event since its inception. As expected the teams even was a non event with South getting smashed in the singles for North to record a resounding and slightly embarrassing victory 23 to 13. The Brown Jacket lived up to expectation, with the lead chopping and changing throughout the day, as expected the pro am winner fell away on the Sunday (it was nice to see him on the fairways on a Sunday though) and left it for others to fight out, former winner Brendon Gale and Matt Stein made a strong challenge, first time entrant Dan Korber showed outstanding form to record the best score of the day and stay in the hunt right to the end, but it was ultimately a race in three, Winx, David Fallon (The Shadow) and Michael Webb. Shadow had completed his round and was a point back from the leaders. With the rest of the field watching on Michael Webb and Winx came down the 18th – it was a tense battle with Michael Webb coming up short and getting relegated back to third, incurring a bill after taking his frustration out on his pitching wedge after chunking his third shot 10 feet!! A very solid and consistent Michael Cunningham won the event, a very deserved winner. At the other end of the leaderboard there was a clear “winner” of the NAGA, Andrew Wood was very strong in literally holding up the field six points adrift of Kevin Neave.

We were pleased to see four new participants this year, David Thomas, Kevin Neave, Daniel Korber and Paul Cheshire (King Dad), which was great. Thanks to all who participated and all who organised and contributed. It was another outstanding weekend, thoroughly enjoyed by all, looking forward to next year already, only 351 sleeps.
