YEAR 2

Environmental Warriors

- Hint of the Week

In Year 2 we are being Environmental Warriors.  By putting our rubbish in the right bin and sorting out the recycling, we are able to help save the environment.  This will save plants, animals and in the end people’s lives!  At St James we have different rubbish bins clearly labelled for us to use.

Miss Whiffen Returns!

Only 4 more days until our beautiful Miss Whiffen returns to St James.

We have missed her so much but know she thoroughly  deserved and enjoyed her trip away.

We can't wait to hear all about her overseas adventures.

We thank lovely Jess Conway on working so well with the Year 2 children over the past three weeks.

Thank you Jess.

YEAR 4

Congratulations Eliza

Last weekend Eliza D won the Theatre De La DanSe, ‘Performer of the Year Award’.

Last year it was won by Sophie Kennedy (St James Alumni), and is awarded to only one student from the whole dance school.

So very proud of her as I’m sure she puts in the same dedication to dancing as she does to school.

YEAR 5

This week 5Mac have begun looking at reviewing books and movies. Below is Marcus’ first attempt at a book review. The structure of the review involves writing a summary, critiquing an element of the story, and providing a rating and a recommendation. The whole class gave Marcus an impromptu round of applause when he read out his review. Neve commented that the language, “hooked her in” and that she “really wanted to read the book now!”

The Hunger Games (Book)

by Marcus  M

Summary

This book is about a woman named Katniss Everdeen and her perspective through a brutal game called the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games makes everyone in the game beat up each other and anyone in their path. She goes through surprising events and even makes a few friends along the way in this gory journey through the Hunger Games. Somehow she got through it all and returned to her town to maybe live a normal life without any distractions.

(I sort of know that she goes into the Quarter quell in the next book where all the victors challenge each other in an another harsh environment).

Critique & Analyse

I admire the author’s detail in this book, it makes the reader want to read more & more & the vocabulary really does hook you in. It makes you feel like you are actually in the story. You get stuck in the book and you don’t even realise what the time is. The story has a lot of cliffhangers. For example, the chapter would finish on something like, “I heard someone scream in pain!” This left me wanting more, and I couldn’t wait for the upcoming chapters.

Rating

Without a doubt, I rate The Hunger Games a whopping 9 out of 10. I loved this book!  It was my time consuming little gem! I wouldn’t even think twice about reading this book if I were you!  It makes your blood curdle and you get excited with what's about to happen around the corner. There's not many books that grapel me in like this one, so in some words I would call this book unique.

Recommendation

I recommend this book to people who can maintain their stomach through ambitious parts of the book and people that don’t like knowing what is going to happen next because it is an ‘all of a sudden book’. So to sum it all up, I recommend this book to people that enjoy going on an adventure through words.

Foundation Learn First Aid

On Thursday 17th October, Foundation attended an informative session on First Aid.

The practical information given to the children by Rachel from St John's Ambulance services could help the children save lives.

The children were engaged and learnt what to do in an emergency. They were shown a video and given simple directions to follow when faced with a dangerous situation.

We thank the St John's Ambulance people for coming and helping the Foundation children learn life saving information.

Well done Foundation.

Foundation  Work on Maths

Last week children in Foundation learnt about the mass of objects and how much items weigh using balancing scales.

The children weighed everyday objects, like scissors, glue sticks, pencils, textas, staplers and other items and ordered their weights from lightest to heaviest.

Children enjoyed working in groups and sharing their information.

Congratulations Foundation on working so well with others and finding out so much about Mass.

Year 2 and Foundation Work Together

Over the last two weeks, the children in Year 2 and Foundation have been working together to create solutions to the fairytale 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' during our STEM lessons.

Children partnered together to firstly design solutions to the problem - 'Help the Billy Goats Gruff cross the river'.

Children drew and labelled diagrams, discussed and shared ideas.

It was wonderful for Mrs Dodds and I to see so many interesting ideas develop like bridges, rafts, zip lines, hot air balloons, catapults, slingshots and ramps.

The children worked well together and came up with creative designs to develop and create.

We can't wait to test and modify our designs next week.

Great Job Year 2 and Foundation

Foundation and the

Three Billy Goats Gruff

This term our Connected Learning focus is 'Creativity'. In Literacy, we have tried to be integrate our 'creativity' with our fairytale.

In week one, we created 'trioramas' to show the story 'Into the Forest' Anthony Browne. Last week we created and used paper bag books on the 'Three Billy Goats Gruff' The children worked hard to present the title, characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the story creatively.

Well done Foundation. The books look amazing!
