Remembrance Day

As a community we paused on Monday 11 November to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in war for Australia. We were very fortunate to have a number of special guests including ex-students of the College who served, as well as relatives of servicemen.

In preparation for our commemoration the Junior School made cut-out poppies so as to decorate the main stage area of the ceremony, calling to mind the Walk of Remembrance at the War Memorial in Canberra. Our guest speaker, Mr David Lethbridge (completed his Intermediate Certificate in 1962), spoke of what ANZAC means for students today and how there are many meanings to the “spirit of ANZAC”. He served in Vietnam in 1968 as part of the 32 Small Ships, a unit that supplied troops along the Mekong Delta and South China Sea.

Our Year 9 Elective History class provided a moving reflection of the meaning of Remembrance Day; our families in Australia receiving news that their much loved relative was simply “missing”.

The Ode was recited by Mrs Maria Barrett, the youngest sister of Jacob De Sisto. Jacob was a former student of St. Pius X who was killed in action in Bougainville in 1944. Zachary Forster of Year 11 added real poignancy to the day by playing the Last Post and The Rouse.

Many thanks to our special guests who added to our service, along with the Maintenance staff who worked to ensure that students were afforded as much shade as we could obtain.

Lest We Forget.

Founder's Day: Friday 22 November at Oxford Falls - Helpers needed please!

It's that time of year again where we need around 15 to 18 helpers to cut the sausages, cook the sausages, bag the bread and generally help make lunch happen for the boys and the staff on Founder's Day.  We would love to see the 2017 or 2018 helpers return and some new volunteers too!  Please let me know if you can assist, even just for an hour or so, between 8:30am and 12:30pm - robson.nadine@gmail.com
