SPX hosts visitors from Cardinal Newman College, Buenos Aires, Argentina
As an Edmund Rice Education Beyond Borders (EREBB) Lead School, St Pius X College has been charged with the challenge of connecting and maintaining the connection with Edmund Rice schools worldwide. In this context, over the past week we have hosted five students and a teacher from Cardinal Newman College, Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Cardinal Newman College is an affluent school with an innovative learning curriculum and many social justice outreach programs to socio-economically disadvantaged areas of Buenos Aires, Argentina and South America. The school first visited Australia in 1985 on Rugby tour, and has visited St Pius three times in recent years to share their, and our, culturally diverse interpretations of the Edmund Rice charism and values. Among their Old Boys they count Argentinian President Mauricio Macri who was previously a President of Boca Juniors Football Club, a position which many supporters hold in even higher esteem!
The students spent a week with Edmund Rice Schools at St Kevin’s Toorak in Melbourne, and St Brendan’s in Yeppoon near Rockhampton before arriving in Sydney last Friday. I thank the Moore (Paddy, Year 10 and Christian and Matthew Year 8), Herrera-Bond (Adrian Year 10), Bradley (Matthew Year 11), and Masters (Liam Year 10 and Cameron Year 7) families who generously hosted home-stays for our Argentinian guests.
In Sydney, through the generosity of these St Pius families, the Argentinian students had the opportunity to catch Manly and Darling Harbour ferries, walk the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Botanical Gardens. They also watched our 1st XI football semi-final victory, attended Monday's College Assembly, lessons, and Year 12 Retreat at Workul Koo in Terrigal as well as visiting St Edward’s Gosford and St Edmund’s Wahroonga, a school for students with mild intellectual disability.
We look forward to planning our reciprocal Social Justice visit to the poorer schools in Bolivia and Peru, hike a part of the Inca Trail and play sport with the Edmund Rice Schools in Argentina and Uruguay.
See Mr Brannan to discuss the possibilities.
Next week our newly elected Student Leadership Team elect will attend a Leadership Camp run by Year 11 Coordinator Ms Donna Janes at Workul Koo. They will begin their Speechcraft Presentation Course to be continued over the holiday break and into Term 4.
The Student Leadership Team will also take the opportunity to skype our newly-found compadres from Cardinal Newman College to share our formulated leadership initiatives and plans for 2020 as well as learn about the Teaching and Learning themes being developed there.
We also hope to exchange communication from our Year 7 Religious Education Students, articulating the values of Edmund Rice and St Pius X College Education and Spirit with the Year 7 Cardinal Newman English students.
