Child Protection
Following the introduction of the Child Safe Standards and Ministerial Order 870 in 2016, the Victorian Parliament has introduced new legislative requirements, which impact schools and other organisations responsible for the care and protection of children.
In 2017, three new laws take effect;
- The new Victorian Reportable Conduct Scheme (the Reportable Conduct Scheme) commences 1 July 2017;
- Schools must report allegations of misconduct to the Victorian Commission for Children and Young People (the Commission).
- The Commission has the power to share information with other organisations such as Working With Children Check (WWCC) Unit and Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
- Complements Mandatory reporting obligations
- Compliance with this scheme will enable schools to better identify and reduce risk of child abuse and respond to allegations of child abuse or misconduct involving children.
- Changes to definitions contained in the Working with Children Check (WWCC) requirements effective from 1 August 2017;
- ‘direct contact’ expanded to ensure that people engaging in child-related work that involves physical contact, face to face contact, written, telephone or oral communication, or electronic contact are required to obtain a WWCC.
- Under ‘child-related work’, there is no distinction made between supervised or unsupervised contact with children.
- A new Duty of Care to Protect Child Abuse effective 1 July 2017.
- The Wrongs Act 1958 (Vic) (Wrongs Act) was amended to impose a new duty of care on organisations exercising care, supervision or authority over children.
- Schools must take “reasonable precautions” to prevent the physical or sexual abuse of a student by an individual associated with the school.
- Schools must be aware of what taking ‘’reasonable precautions’’ means in practice.
Catholic Regional College Sydenham has zero tolerance for child abuse and is committed to the protection of all children from all forms of child abuse.
If you have a belief or suspicion that a child is being, or has been, subjected to any form of abuse you must contact the Victorian Child Protection Service or, where you need guidance on making a report or have questions regarding child safety, contact the College's appointed Child Safety Officer, Naomi Bartley on 9361 0000. Further information relating to College policies can be located on the College website.
Student Expectations
Many of our students have been attending the Brimbank Youth Services before school and immediately after school. The College has also been contacted on occasion because students in the CRC uniform
have not behaved as the College, families or the centre would expect. Students and families are reminded that Catholic Regional College Sydenham does not permit students in uniform to go to Watergardens or any other venue while in uniform. In fact, the College's duty of care extends to students until they arrive home after they leave the College. To this end, the College does not sanction nor condone any deviation once students are dismissed other than to go directly home. Where students have work arrangements and this can not be avoided, the student is to speak with their Cluster Coordinator to register these details so that the College is aware of the arrangement. The only exception to this requirement is when a student is picked up by a parent and attends with their parent.
Students are not to enter Watergardens unaccompanied while in school uniform.
