News from our Classrooms

Prep News

The past two weeks have been very busy in the Prep area. Today is Day 21 as we count towards 100 Days of Prep.

Last week the Prep students shared items from their "Me" boxes with their class. This was a great opportunity to share with everyone a little bit more about each other. We learnt what interests we have, what sports we participate in and also a look at a favourite toy or two.

During Literacy on a Monday morning, the students have blown bubbles and made sprinkle sandwiches. This Language Experience activity helps everyone to think of a sentence which the teacher writes down and the students then share their sentence with each other. They also love having a photo or two taken to remember what happened and to assist them with formulating a sentence.

The Prep students of 2018 have become fantastic Self Managers since beginning school and they should be congratulated for remembering what needs to happen each morning in order to prepare for the school day. Keep up the great work!

Year 1/2 News

The students are very settled and working hard.

In Religion, they have written their Lenten promises about prayer, almsgiving and fasting. They are reflecting on examples of generosity at home and at school.

In Literacy,  the students are learning about literal meaning in texts. They have been learning about what makes narratives interesting by identifying ‘Sizzling Starts’ in movies and story books. They are enjoying writing using various picture prompts.

What a great excursion to Taskworks. The students have been learning about working together to achieve a common goal. They are writing about their experiences. A big thank you to all the parents who volunteered and attended the excursion.

In Numeracy, students are focussing on place value. They are rounding numbers to the nearest ten/hundred. The students are understanding the value of each digit in a number and putting numbers in a counting pattern. They are playing Mastermind and Keeping the Count to improve their mental computation strategies.

Year 3/4 News

It is hard to believe that we are already in week 6 of the term. The students are well and truly settled and are making good choices with their behaviour. It is good to see that they remember our school rules and are working towards making our school a happy place for everyone.

In Reading, the students have investigated “Author’s Purpose” to discover that authors write their texts to persuade, inform or entertain their audiences. They have also looked at how the text features in an information text can help them to understand what they are reading.

In Writing, the students have been very engaged in writing their “Sizzling Starts” which are composed in a way which will capture the reader’s attention and draw the reader into continuing to read the narrative. It has been amazing to see that the students can create such exciting beginnings to their narratives.

Our focus in Maths so far this term has been on ‘Place Value’. The students have been playing lots of games together and completing number puzzles to help them understand how the value of a given digit can change depending on where it is placed in a number. It has been wonderful to listen to the rich conversations between students and to hear them explain and justify how they have come to a particular answer or why they have put particular numbers in particular places.

In Religious Education and Inquiry, we have continued to look at how we can make responsible decisions that are fair for all. The students have found out the difference between a rule and a law and are now investigating how and why laws are made and why it is important for lawmakers to think about the consequences of their decisions. During this season of Lent, we are reflecting on our choices and the decisions we make. Our decisions affect others and we need to consider the consequences of our decisions and work together to make responsible choices which will benefit others in the community.

Year 5/6 News

The 5/6 students having been working well in all areas if the curriculum and are making great choices in the way they treat others, collaborate, show respect and follow the school rules.

In Maths we are working on place value and mental computation activities, such as the counting choir, renaming using MAB and other hands on materials, reading and recording large numbers and rounding. We are now moving onto decimal number work.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on the strategies of an effective reader, including; reading texts and comprehension questions carefully, highlighting the most important information, re-reading and skim reading to retrieve literal information, in order to gain a deep understanding of a text.

In Inquiry/R.E., we have been investigating people that have used their power to make a positive change to help people and people that have use their power in a negative way and how it affects others. We are also learning about the Catholic Social Justice teaching of Subsidiarity and Participation. We discussed how everyone should be treated equally and have a say in decisions that affect them and their community.

We are now investigating the different levels of government, how the federation of Australia occured, and the different types of power around the world such as democracy, monarchy, dictatorship etc. We are looking forward to our upcoming excursion in Week 8 on Wednesday the 21st for 5/6DJ and 5/6AB and Thursday the 22nd for 5/6TF and 5/6CC.

Please return excursion permission forms and Camp initial attendance notes, if you have not already done so.
