News from our Classrooms

Students of the Week

Congratulations to our Students of the Week for Week 5.

Foundation News

This week is the first full week of school for the Foundation LW students. It will also be the first time they participate in Italian lessons and Physical Education lessons beginning this Wednesday 4th March. That also means that they get to wear their P.E. uniform each Wednesday. The students are very excited about Wednesdays!!!

Today is Day 18 as we continue to count towards 100 Days of School.

The Mass and morning tea on Sunday, was a great success. It was wonderful to see the Foundation students with their buddies. It was great to see the parents of both levels getting to know each other too. Many thanks to the Parish Social Committee for setting up the hall and organising the drinks that accompanied the delicious donuts and cake from The Village Bakery. Many thanks to the Spyrou family who own the Bakery for providing the yummy food.

The Foundation students are working very well in class and following the Agreed Ways with great enthusiasm. They are beginning to learn each other’s names and are starting to play with each other out in the yard with more confidence.

This Wednesday 4th March we will be attending the 9:15am Parish Mass with 1/2VC. Parents are most welcome to join us.

Have a great week!

Year 1/2 News

Students are working well in the 1/2 classes.

In the classroom our Inquiry unit, “How can I Grow and Change? How can I Help Others” is well under way. They are focussing on how they have changed since Prep. The students are learning to be good collaborators.

In Literacy,  they are learning to self monitor when reading and writing descriptive language using various images.

In Numeracy, they are focussing on representing numbers in different ways.

In Religion, the students are focussing on the importance of Ash Wednesday and Lent.

Year 3/4 News

It is hard to believe that we are already past the halfway mark of Term One!  Lots of learning and excitement has been happening in the Year 3/4 classrooms. We have all settled into the routine of our specialist classes and the students are enjoying our weekly Intra-Sports lessons on Friday mornings, where they compete against each other, playing Soccer Rounders, Newcombe and Tee-ball in mixed teams.

“Intra school sports is a lot of fun. There is a variety of sports to learn and to play and we also learn how to work as a team and show good sportsmanship to others”  - Chloe  3/4GT

Last Wednesday, February 26th, was Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday commences the church season of Lent. Lent is a reminder to all of us, of the importance of penance (sacrifice), prayer and almsgiving (looking after those in need).

The Year 3 and Year 4 students have reflected deeply on the meaning of Lent and have begun to consider how their actions affect their relationship with God. We have written our own prayers, Lenten promises and listed kind deeds to show this understanding. We have also investigated the good work of Caritas. The Caritas Project Compassion 2020 weekly stories have inspired us to be more generous, kind and loving to those in need. It only takes one person’s efforts to make the world a better place, so what will you do during Lent?

“I’m making slime to sell to students at school and at my Dancing. All the money I raise is put into my Project Compassion box and donated to Caritas”  - Eve 3/4KD.

“My family and I donated all of our old clothes to the needy in our community. It felt good helping others less fortunate” - Simon 3/4KD.

“For Lent I am fasting from playing video games. I have cut down my time on the laptop and I’m now using this spare time for what is more important - like spending time with and helping my family more” - Genevieve 3/4BF

“I’m giving up drinking lemonade this Lent and I have already donated my old clothes to help those who experience hardship and poverty” - Ava 3/4BF.

REMINDERS:

Please join 3/4KD and 3/4BF for our Whole School Prayer service this Friday 6/3/20 and next Friday 13/6/20 in the Hall.

Don’t forget your Library bag! Library books will be ready for borrowing by the end of this week.

Enjoy your long weekend everyone!

Year 5/6 News

The Year 5/6 students continue to work well and support one another both in and out of the classroom. All students attended the Ash Wednesday Mass last week and their prayerfulness and reverence was again great to see. We will continue to explore what Lent means to each of us and gain an understanding of how Caritas works with others who are less fortunate than us through Project Compassion.

During Inquiry sessions, the students have been focusing on the concept of Who’s Got the Power? The students have been looking at decision makers, powerful individuals, what is power and have just recently started looking at government and the role it can play in our lives. In the last week of this term, the students will finish the unit of work with an excursion to the State Parliament in the city.

On Tuesday, March 10th all students will participate in a whole day incursion here at school. The incursion is called: The Super Hero in You. The Year 5/6  students will explore their own character strengths and super powers. Each student will be given the opportunity to creatively explore these strengths and recognise how they can bring them to life.  After the incursion, the students will be encouraged to bring those superpowers back to the classroom and continue to build a positive learning community.

Interschool sport has continued with all teams showing real skill and fair play. The students have continued to represent themselves and the school in a very positive manner. It has been great to witness the support the students are giving one another during the games. Keep up the great work. GO SAINTS!

A big thank you to all of the Year 6 students and their families who were able to make it to Mass and the Buddy presentation yesterday. It was great to see smiles on so many faces as new friendships and connections are being formed.

We would like to acknowledge the positive start the students have made this year. The mood in the SLA is a happy and supportive one, and we thank the students for making this happen. We look forward to another fortnight of learning and active participation in all activities.
