Religious Education Curriculum framework
Throughout 2017, the staff at St Fidelis' worked hard to unpack the renewed Religious Education Curriculum which was released in draft form by Catholic Education Melbourne in 2017 as a guide for all Catholic Schools to follow. The framework supports the full flourishing of all learners as spiritual and religious, physical and cognitive, social and emotional beings through Religious Education. Through the renewed Religious Curriculum, teachers and students are able to design their learning so that it encompasses the big questions that we are unpacking throughout the year, using the inquiry process as a basis for learning.
If you would like to know more about the Religious Education Curriculum please come along to our workshop tomorrow night at 7pm in the Senior Learning Area. Meanwhile, here is a look at what some year levels have been inquiring into this term:
Prep:
Our BIG QUESTION for this term is ‘What is my history and how do I know?' An important part of their history is the fact that they belong to God’s family. Our prep students have been inquiring into their own life stories, and that of their parents and grandparents with a focus on looking at objects, photographs, oral histories and interviews. They’ve also been learning about about Jesus` history through stories in the bible and have begun looking at families and how being part of a family is an important part to knowing about their history. The preps have also been investigating how being part of Jesus` family is an important part of their history as well. They will be taking part in comparing the stories of Jesus and making connections to their own experience of family and friendship.
Year 1/2:
The students in year 1/2 have been busy inquiring into 'What clues about the past are here in the present?' They have been busy learning about what it was like to attend school in the past. They have also been learning about what it was like to attend mass in the past. To kick start their unit, the students in year 1/2 visited St Fidelis church and explored some of the symbols that are found in the church and what these mean. On Wednesday, the students will take a bus tour around our local area, incorporating a visit to St Thomas Moore’s church so we can compare the differences and similarities between parish churches. This way, we can see what it is about churches that is extremely important to the people of God. Students will learn how Indigenous Australians have lived in and around the local area for a long time before the town was built and they will also explore the Bible as a tool for learning about our Catholic Tradition.
We are looking forward to seeing what the Preps and Year 1/2 students learn about themselves, their local community and the churches in our area.
