Kildare opened the 2018 Combined Wagga High Schools Football competition with a commanding display against the 2017 Champions, Wagga Wagga High School.
In a tightly contested game the play flowed from one end of the pitch to the other. Xavier Lyons opened the scoring for Kildare with a superb shot into the top right hand corner of the goal from just outside the penalty box that gave the Wagga High goal keeper no chance to save.
Wagga High pressed for an equalising goal. After some sustained pressure on the Kildare goal, Wagga High eventually equalised.
Kildare then came close when Camryn McCrory’s effort was nearly rewarded when his goal bound shot was stopped by an excellent save by the Wagga High keeper.
Half-time had the score at 1-1.
Although Wagga High exerted pressure on the Kildare defence in the second half, Mitch McCrory in Kildare’s goals was seldom troubled. Sam Jones organised his fellow defenders, Isaac Schiller, Joshua Conlan and Joshua Timothy-Nesbitt to deal with Wagga High’s forays into Kildare’s half.
Ano Matowe, Xavier Lyons and James Goode covered a huge amount of the ground in midfield to stifle numerous moves by Wagga High.
William Goode, Jamieson Honda and Camryn McCrory caused the Wagga High defence headaches every time they received the ball.
The Wagga High goal keeper made excellent, reflex saves to deny Xavier Lyons, James Goode and William Goode from scoring.
Substitutes Irish Freemantle, Joshua Buchanan and Mitchell Ivey worked tirelessly when introduced into the game.
Final score 1-1, but Kildare won the match on points with a confidence building display.
Kildare now look forward to their next match verses Mater Dei Catholic College in the 2nd round of the competition.

In the second round of the 2018 Combined Wagga High Schools Competition, Kildare came up against a strong and determined Mater Dei outfit.
In a tightly contested game, Kildare continued to challenge Mater Dei’s defence with a number of attacking opportunities. After conceding a goal close to the end of the first half, Kildare were quick to bounce back after some ‘magic’ from Aliance Irishura who found himself one on one with the keeper and finishing strongly.
Half time score had it all tied up at 1-1.
After an inspirational talk from Coach Carter (Harry Toole) at the halftime break, Kildare came out in the second half with much added pressure and intent after a master class display from Ano Matowe, Xavier Lyons, and Irish Fremantle in the midfield and Camryn Mccory and William Goode using their pace to break through Mater Dei’s defence.
Samuel Jones was a brick-wall all game and organised his fellow defenders, Isaac Shiller, Joshua Conlan, Joshua Timothy-Nesbitt and Mitchell Ivey. However, after small moments of lapses, the Mater Dei front three were able to score two quick goals in the final moments of the game.
Final score 3-1, but Kildare showed promise and can have confidence going into the finals with Josh Buchanan assuring that “We’ll be back!”
Kildare now look forward to their next match.
