In the Classroom

Senior School

Year 5/6

This term, we have been busy in the 5/6 classroom: from camp to cross country to the soccer gala day at St John's, we have been everywhere!

In English, the students are developing their reading comprehension skills, learning about affixes and becoming experts at identifying persuasive devices used in writing.

In Maths, we have strengthened our understanding of place value, completed a whole unit on time and for the rest of the term, we will have a big focus on addition and subtraction.

In Inquiry, the year 5/6s have the focus question of "How can we be the change in the world?" in which the students explored the rights and responsibilities of Australian citizens. Students are now learning about healthy eating. The student's enquiry will lead to an exploration of promoting health around the school.

In Religious Education, our question is, "How does the Church ask us to change?" This term's unit is based on the Catholic Social Teaching of Preferential Option for the Poor. Students have explored a website called "Dollar Street." The site gave them a glimpse of life for families with low incomes. They have engaged in Gospel passages around helping others and will begin to organise a way to raise money to help those less fortunate than us.
