Out and About at Melbourne Zoo

Last week our Year 7 students were very fortunate to have an excursion to Melbourne Zoo as part of their study; Classification of the Living World. Beaufort and District Op Shop very generously donated funds to help pay for our bus and we are incredibly grateful for the continued support they provide our families and school.

In this Fighting Extinction Schools program, students learnt valuable observation and classification skills to allow them to organise animals into groups based on shared characteristics. They were challenged to identify and classify animals based on part of the skeleton of an animal (moulded, not real), and then asked to determine what adaptations the animal may have made to help them survive in their environment. Students also needed to think about what threats the animals are facing in the wild.

The day was a great success, with staff and students thoroughly enjoying the experience.
