Science in the Kitchen

Following on from last issue where we looked into the rock cycle with our Year 8 Science students, this week they have been studying the same topic but in the kitchen. Students were given one of three different tasks and asked to pay attention to the processes used to make their special treats and compare the final product with the ingredients used.

The first task was Banana Choc Chip Muffins, where the students observed the chocolate pieces changing from hard to soft during the cooking process, simulating the creation of metamorphic rock. Second up was Caramel Slice, which involved a number of different cooking stages, resulting in 3 delicious layers resembling sedimentary rock, the crunchy base, the warm gooey caramel and the glossy chocolate, before finally being placed in the refrigerator to set (much to the disappointment of students).

Finally the last task was Tempered Chocolate which represented igneous rock, starting out soft and forming crystals or shards once set.

The class were extremely pleased with the end results, feasting on the sweet treats once the tasks were complete.
