Around the Primary Classes

What’s the Buzz been about in Kinder?
Kindergarten students have been busy learning about ‘bees’ this term. A bee keeper named Maddie, visited the class to share her knowledge of bees with the children. They learnt a lot about how bees behave in a hive and the important role they play in our natural world. A highlight for some of the children was getting to hold the live ‘bee in a jar’ inside of which there was some honey! We let the bee go when Maddie left so he could ‘Bee ‘ Free!!
Prep
The Prep class would like to showcase our most recent hands-on learning opportunities, which include (but are not limited to!) Anzac biscuit making and tissue paper turtles, supporting our InitialLit learning; pansy planting during garden time; and tactile 10 frames, which have been a big feature during our current mathematics focus. These are examples of learning experiences that the children naturally relish and love to share.
Year One
In Year 1 with Mrs Tucker, we have been learning about Location. We have been looking at different directions and maps. We have been outside to visit the school map and the students drew the four locations we went to. When they came inside they created their own school map. Over the next few weeks we will continue learning about maps.
Year Two
Year 2 read “ How to Babysit a Grandma“ by Jean Reagan. The students wrote a list on how to keep their grandparent busy. They will then write a procedure on how they can babysit their grandparent.
Primary Debating
This year, we have many students in the Primary school having a go at competitive debating. There are more schools involved than ever, including teams from Collegiate, Friends, Corpus Christi, Fahan, Hutchins and St Mary's. The first debate was held on last Wednesday at Hutchins and the topic was ‘Uniforms should be banned’.
Our Year 5 team was represented by Carla Mione, Eliza Fleming and Eve Coleman.
Our Year 6 team was represented by Georgie Costelloe, Ruby Sullivan and Isobel Denby.
Both teams did very well and won their debates. It was quite close in the case of the Year 5 team. The Year 6 team were fantastic, with their slogan ‘Freedom and Rights, Not Skirts and Tights".
yLead
On Friday 20 May, our Year 6 leaders joined a number of schools around Tasmania to take part in the yLead online leadership experience. Throughout the day the students explored the acronym HEART through a series engaging and hands on activities.
The Lead with HEART acronym goals:
H : Helpful - looking for leadership moments and responding to them everyday.
E : Energy - choosing the right moments to promote positive energy versus negative energy.
A : Aware & Active - being aware of your personal strengths and taking actions on them to contribute.
R : Resilient - learning to face challenges and reflect on them as learning opportunities.
T : Team Player - the importance of working with others in a supportive and encouraging environment.
The students came away from the day understanding more about leaderships and the potential impact of their actions as a leader. Some quotes from your Year 6 Leaders about the day:
