The C is for Courage

Nelson Mandela: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man [or woman] is not he [or she] who does not feel afraid, but he [or she] who conquers that fear.”

Wellbeing has a lot to do with courage. The courage to be yourself. The courage to seek help when you need it. The courage to try.

Too often we think that being brave means that we are not afraid. This is not true! You can be brave especially when you are afraid. Courage is not the absence of fear. It's doing something even though you are scared.

So today I want to en-courage you to be brave and to be a cheerleader to others who are being brave. Parents, take your children's fears seriously, but also encourage them to be brave, acknowledge their fears, and overcome them! Note that this is very different from pretending you are not scared, or from telling your children that they should not be scared. Fear is simply an emotion. Emotions happen and are allowed to exist. Courage is a decision.

Good luck!
