Local Heroes inspire us to: Donate today to "Soul Cafe" - Kanicia Denniss and Shanikwa Johnson (Year 12)
In our English Studies class this term, we have been studying Local Heroes, a topic where we engage with the community to gain insight into how local people in the community help our local area. We heard the inspiring stories from a fireman who gave up his time to travel to Victoria to fight bushfires, Leigh "The Beast" Creighton who is aspiring to be a ParaOlympian, is writing a book, is a professional speaker and disability
advocate and Kayla Romanuik, ex-Kurri Bulldogs player now a part of the Newcaslte Knights WNRL team who loves giving back to supporting girls in sport as much as she loves playing.
Among these guests, we spoke to Matt Ortiger the manager of Soul Cafe, a Newcastle based charity that provides haircuts, legal and medical services and even
meals for people who are displaced (homeless). We were inspired by his commitment to helping those in needs and felt
we should contribute too.
As a year group, we’ve decided to help by donating to Newcastle’s Soul Café. Please help us do this by donating long life milk to our school and together we can work to give back. Year twelve students will be visiting your classrooms in the first weeks of term 2, reminding you to donate if you can. All donations can be dropped at the front office by Friday week 3 (12/5/23).
SRC 2023
A Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group of students elected by their fellow students to represent all students in the school. SRCs work democratically to represent the student body in school decision-making and organise ways for students to participate in school life.
We would like to introduce the SRC for KKHS for 2023:
Amy Boughton
Blake Masterman
Isabella Williams
Riley Chapple
Justin Chandra
Jessica-Lee Kelly
Olivia McDonald
Esther Tedd
We are currently working on some exciting projects, including our event for Harmony week and our event for Youth Week in Term 2.
We would love to see more representation from a range of year groups. If you are interested in joining the SRC and having a say in what happens around our school, keep an eye out for our next meeting. We meet twice a term to discuss our goals.
A reminder that attendance matters:
Let us know if your child is absent.
The health and safety of our students is extremely important to us. One way we protect the wellbeing of your child is by fulfilling our responsibilities as both parents/carers and school staff by reporting and monitoring student absences.
Please remember to contact the school on 4937 1877 This is best done early in the morning if your child is going to be away or late for school so your child’s absence can be recorded correctly. You can also reply directly to the absentee text message
If you speak a language other than English and need help talking with our staff, please telephone the interpreter service on 131 450. This service is free. Listen in your language or see How to contact the Telephone Interpreter Service.
For further information on the processes our school uses to record, monitor and follow-up student attendance and absences please read our School Attendance Policy.
