Curriculum Matters

Level 1

Over the past couple of weeks the Level 1 students have been focussing on the book “We’re going on a bear hunt” in their writing sessions.

Their learning intention has covered, being able to write the beginning, middle and end of the story, as well as creating an alternative setting to the story. They also used adjectives to describe the characters. Many students loved doing some craft in the classroom where they made the bear from the story.

In Numeracy we have been looking at 2D and 3D shapes.

Students have explored these in many different ways, through creating anchor charts, flip books and making 2D monsters. They also loved going on shape walks around the school hunting for both 2D and 3D shapes.

Level 2

Over the last couple of weeks, Level 2 have been learning about dreamtime stories to help them with their narrative writing.

Last week, the students made beautiful bird masks which transformed from plain black to vibrant colours and patterns. They used these to create plays about the dreamtime story ‘How the Birds Got Their Colour’. Acting was a fun way to revise the structure of a narrative and all the students did a fantastic job at retelling the story.

Level 3

Last Thursday, level 3 students had the opportunity to visit the Royal Melbourne Zoo.

It was an exciting and educational experience for everyone. Students were able to observe and learn about a wide variety of animals, from African elephants to Australian koalas. The zookeepers were knowledgeable and friendly, providing interesting facts and stories about the animals.

It was a great opportunity to see these amazing creatures up close and personal.

The whole excursion was a wonderful learning experience, and the students left with a greater understanding and appreciation of the natural world.

Level 5

On Friday 3 March 2023 the grade 5 students travelled into the city to visit China Town and Queen Victoria Market.

This excursion was organised to support our Inquiry topic as we are studying the countries from the Northern Hemisphere and the impact they have had on the cultural diversity on Australia.

As we strolled around the Queen Victoria Market, students identified many traders selling good from different countries including Poland, Turkey, Vietnam, Greece, Africa, Italy, America and so many more. We talked about how we all enjoy and celebrate the diversity we are able to enjoy in Australia today.

We were lucky enough to tour the laneways of the city and China Town with guides that shared lots of historical facts.

Level 6

In the past weeks, the Grade 6’s have been rotating between the year 6 rooms to attend rotations based on our topic of ‘Design and Construction’.

Mr.Kal’s room was about building a tower out of newspaper  with only 10 pieces of newspaper, three people and a roll of tape.

In Miss Powrie’s room, we had to design and build a home in Minecraft. First, we sketched a design of the house, then we needed to build the house in a thirty by thirty perimeter.  It had to include a kitchen, a bedroom, laundry, bathroom, and had to be under three floors high. Then we built houses in a Minecraft world.

Finally, in Miss Little’s classroom, we tried building cars out of Meccano. This was all done to teach us how to design and engineer for the egg drop contraptions later in the term.

Leadership conference

On Tuesday the 28th of February, all  32 captains met up at Syndal Station with Miss Little and Mrs Stewart to take a train into the city to attend the Youth Leadership Conference.

Once we got off the train we had to take a tram to the Convention Centre. The experience was fun, inspirational, energetic and thrilling. Some of the speakers were Talay, Wil and Liam. They all gave us inspiration, great advice and tips. Ari and Nathan even got to speak into the microphone and talk about their opinions on leadership.

In conclusion it was a brilliant experience and each and everyone of us took a lot from it.
