Ms Christine Larsen - Curriculum Leader The Arts

From the Visual Art Department

In Week 9, Year 11 Visual Art students participated in an artist talk and workshop with Brisbane-based multi-media artist Carolyn V Watson. Carolyn's labour-intensive artworks focus on surface and form, and through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction, her sculptures and paintings draw the viewer into an alternate world to a place that sits somewhere between the natural and the artificial. Under Carolyn's guidance, the students developed their own sculptural pieces which will form part of their experimental folio for the unit, "Art as Lens."

We would like to congratulate our first "Artwork of the Month" recipient, Year 10 student, Francis Schutt. As part of the current unit, "The Edge," which focuses on the intersection between the natural and built environments, Francis has developed a landscape composition and a mixed media artwork using the "Tiny Planet" App as the starting point.

Year 5 Musical “Joust”

Last Thursday evening, the young gentlemen of Year 5 starred in their debut performance at Marist – wowing audiences with their production of "Joust". The production saw the boys join Merlin and King Arthur on a mighty, medieval journey of epic proportions. We couldn't be prouder of the show the boys put on, and we look forward to seeing them grow on their musical journey at Marist. Big congratulations to all the boys and music staff involved, especially Ms Melanie Stewart, who was the driving force behind the project. Special thanks must also go to Year 11 music student, George Bell, who played Merlin and led the boys in the production. Finally, congratulations to Year 5 student, Owen Ambrose (5 Red), on his wonderful performance in the lead role, King Arthur.

Recording Studio

Our new state-of-the-art recording studio is now well and truly in use, and our senior music students are loving recording and performing music in this wonderful space. With senior performance assessments being finalised this week, many of the boys have had the opportunity to record their performances in the studio, as well as learn about tracking audio in a real-world setting. We look forward to continuing to work with the boys in this space and can't wait to hear all of the amazing music they are going to produce. This video of Year 12 band Miss Mardy (Kyle Bedford, Danny O'Rourke, Tom Doherty, and Max Hodge) is a taste of what the boys have been working on and is an original composition written by the band members.
