SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight on Kindergarten

This week started with excitement for Kindergarten as they began their Monday morning with a special visit from members of the community who keep us safe. The students listened carefully to messages from Tamworth Bus lines, NRMA and a Police Officer.  The Kindergarten students then boarded a bus for a short ride around East Tamworth, before returning back to school. For some children, this was their first experience of public transport and they all enjoyed the experience.

Year 3's Spotlight

Year 3 have hit the ground running. We are preparing for NAPLAN by making all the students familiar with the test so we can reduce nerves on the day.

Last week we did our first Cold Write for the year. Students were asked to write a narrative about a gift that has been left at their front door. To stimulate the creative juices we had a table of gifts for the students to explore. We shook them, felt different weights and sizes, remembered presents we've received previously and imagined receiving one of these gifts. The students produced some great ideas and the vibe in year 3 was great….Anh Do’s in the making!

We love spending time outside and shaking off all our sillys. We’ve had great weather and have been working on gross motor skills during sport. We also have a little fun making the students walk like crabs, fly like bees, tip toe like thieves and laugh while they do it!

We are loving getting to know all the fabulous little personalities in Year 3. We are so excited to spend the year learning together and having fun.

MaST update...

One of the components of the Mathematics Improvement Program we’ve been implementing at St Nicholas this year is called ‘the Hook’. This is a part of the Great Maths Learning Sequence that grabs student's attention and promotes their interest in the topic and language of the unit.

Year 1 have been visited by a very confused teacher who didn’t know what month it was, and the Number Fairy, who has been causing all sorts of mischief in the classrooms this week.

Year 2 had a real world problem presented to them, how do we know when to send a birthday card to our dearly beloved Mum? What things do I need to know to get it there at the right time?

Keep an eye out for more exciting Hooks as we travel further on our MaST journey.
